Hidden Valley Hibiscus Open House

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Well, I went to the HIdden Valley Hibiscus open house yesterday. It was my first visit to a nursery's open house, and boy did I have fun! Charles Black was very nice and informative and there were so many different cultivars my mom and I just went nuts deciding what to buy. I ended up with little liners of Belle de Jour, Soft Spot, Rum Runner, Suede Button and Creme de Cacao. All the plants, whether small or large were incredibly healthy looking. I purchased the two gallon size of Renaissance Blue, as well as two varities that I couldn't even find on his website: Palm Springs and Brown Sugar. Both of those were in bloom when I got them home last night. Here's Brown Sugar. Probably not the greatest picture, but the flower is just so unusual and beautiful!

And here is Palm Springs. Both plants have a lot more buds waiting to open, so I'm sure to have a beautiful hibiscus week!

Those plants really do look healthy. I'm with Kyle, I would have had to rent a U-Haul if I were there.
Beautiful flowers.

I went too. Bought way too many (again). Ha Ha. I mostly bought little starter ones this time. Wonder how long I will have to grow these before they will bloom? I potted them up one size when I got home as they were all root bound anyway.
I keep looking for Beach Ball and missing it however. I also want to get Pretty woman and never can. Oh well...next year.

I did the same thing on the babies, potting them up a little larger. So which ones did you buy?? Did you buy any of the large ones?

Yes, I got an Irene Collins in a big pot. Was lucky to find it, there was only one. It was fairly picked over by the time we got there at 2:30. (we had the wrong day marked on the calander & almost missed it completely).
The other ones I got were:
In little pots:
Fat Actress
New Dimention
Belle de Jour
Cloudberry Jam
In 6" pots:
Living Legend
Larger Than Life
That was all I got this time. Last time I went (In spring) I got:
Lady in Waiting
First Lady
Monte Carlo
and Double Trouble
those were all in 6" pots that I moved up immediatlely to 3 gal. pots as they were all very rootbound. They have done fine.

Oh I wish I could have gone! I found out too late about it, and had to work that day. Although, I'm with the U-Haul bunch in that my poor little car would have been full of new additions to my garden if I had gone!

Next year for sure! :)

Don't worry, Island Gurl...he seems to have them more often now that he is in the new location in Fallbrook (actually it seems closer to Bonsil). We had just gone to the one he had when he first moved in there, and now he had another one already. I think he had more to offer when he was giving them at the other place however. Definately a lot more 6" pots there anyway.
