Alocasia babies

My Alocasia x Amazonica and Dewey's Reversa gets these little side shoots that usually dry out and rot away. Do you have to let it mature before separating it from the main plant or can you cut it off and try to root it some other way?

I really don't know, but it seems logical that an experiment wouldn't hurt. If saved before drying out, the shoots might be able to keep growing on their own. You might try rooting a couple in water and another one or two dipped in rooting hormone and then potting soil. If you're concerned about possible damage to the main plant, you could cut just one shoot at a time, and leave the cut exposed to air until it scabs over.
