Raja Puri bloom

Waverly, MO(Zone 5b)

My raja puri is blooming. After such a hot, dry year it is good to see this bloom!!! I also have another one blooming
but I don't know what kind it is. After having banana's for around 5 years it is exciting to get blooms.

bruglover, that is exciting!! How have you grown the Raja puri? Do you keep it in the ground over the winter or do you keep it in a pot over the winter inside and plant in the ground in the summer?

This one started a baby and grew to around 8 ft tall and 31 inches around the base last year. It grew faster then any of my other raja puri's. It was so heavy. Put it in the garage over the winter and then this spring planted it back in the ground. It kept falling over
so I cut it back to around 3 ft. I sure wished I wouldn't have done that. I have a four ft
banana with blooms!!! I have had some raja puri's for 3 yrs that have not gotten that big or bloomed. This one must have been on steroids......

Can you clarify - when you put in the garage was it already "frosted?"
I've got my first banana bloom this year too but my plant was in a big pot in the garage and did not loose any leaves. It went completely dormant but was never exposed to a freeze.

Yes I dug it up before the first frost. The whole plant, I did not cut it back or anything. Then put it in a pot and stored it in the garage. If it gets to cold in the garage I run a small space heater so it will not freeze.

I got it online from Stokes Tropicals. When I first started in banana's no one around here had them. Now more places are selling them. Kell, after you posted about the plumeria at Lowes in KC (plumeria forum), I went and got 4 of them. Thanks for posting that!!!
