I have started to TRY to harvest seeds from my hardy hib. I have let them mature on the plant, usually picking them up off the ground. Many of the seed pods have seeds, I thought, but they are really tiny, like moss rose seeds, but a little bigger. I found them in the middle of the pod, in individual quarters. I thought I was doing it right, but today when I opened a pod, I found much larger ones. like half the size of a 4 o'clock seed. (Sorry, just using seed sizes I know.) What's up. I figure I have not been getting seeds like I thought, so what am I doing wrong? Is there some sort of trick?
question on seed gathering. please help a poor lost soul.
I leave the pods on the plant till they start to open then pick off the pods and open them over a large bowl to catch the seeds. They should be a nice brown color and the size of a small BB. like in BB guns. Hope this helps. Should be about 12 + to a pod.
kaykay1010 - a seed pod from mine is on the way to you! I sent the entire pod, so you will see what mine look like when they're ready. There are probably 30+ seeds in each pod. Now, I have another one that has only given me one pod, and the seeds are much much smaller. Tiny, even. I've planted 8 seeds and so far have 2 seedlings from that batch, and they are looking good.
thanks a bunch. I appreciate your help.
Everyone, I finally figured it out. I had not been getting the flowers pollinated. Now I have been doing it myself, and just crossed the two I have. I am seeing the pods swell, so it went well. I have a burgundy/red maple leaf type and a pink Wonder what I'll get? I like surprises. Susan, thank you so much. Your pod finally helped me put the pieces together. Here is my pink, I forget what variety it is.
