I am trying to grow brugmansia and datura and it seems like every time they start to put off a bud, it falls off. I haven't had but ONE brug flower and no daturas as of yet. The brugs are over a year old and the dats are about 8 months old. I water them daily because of this heat but am I doing something wrong? My brugs have almost no leaves on them and some of them are getting these lumpy red spots on the branches. What should I do? I am desperate to see them bloom.

Is it me or the heat??
It sounds like some kind of insect may be eating the buds on your plants. I have that happen sometimes on my hibiscus plants. The buds will just fall off.
I haven't had a brug bloom either. No problem with insects or anything. The plant looks beautiful, just no blooms. :(
I wasn't getting blooms on my healthy looking plant either. It was growing fine, just no blooms. I found out that the age doesn't matter as they bloom on new growth, like hibiscus. I was feeding with osmocote and someone said that wasn't enough for them, and suggested I try miracle grow. I've fed with miracle grow and got one flush of 5 blooms and then no more. I'm still feeding weekly, watering almost daily, no pests or disease, but no blooms either. I have concluded that some varities bloom more than others. There are several others in our neighborhood that have tons of blooms for months on end, but they all appear to be the same variety with yellow blooms. Mine is a Miss Anna, pink bloom (or evidently no bloom). It was planted in ground this spring as a 6" well rooted cutting. It is now over 6 feet tall and well branched. Do you know what variety you have? If anyone knows any more about this problem, I'd love to hear a solution.
Jason, my Brugs aren't blooming as much as they were a month ago, I think the heat has something to do with it.
Try your post on the Brug forum, many experts over there.
My Danturas are still going in the heat... at least the white ones..
What danturas do you have there?
Mitch, where did you get that Datura?
I have been using bloom boost on them but haven't fed in about 6 weeks. My friend told me it burns them in bad heat like this. I gave in last night and fed them. Hopefully I will see something soon. Most of my brugs are unknown color. I did see on the news last night though that later this week we have a cool front coming through. It said we would be DOWN to 96 degrees. Never thought I'd pray for that temp. Hopefully we get some rain too. That should help my plants.
I may go ahead and post on the brug forum later if I don't start seeing some buds soon. I really want to see my brugs flush. Thank you guys for the advice.

The American Horticultural Society created the heat zone map to help gardeners evaluate the endurance level of many plants. Extensive research has shown that a great many cultivars suffer serious physiological damage when the temperature remains steadily above 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Designed to complement the hardiness zone map, the heat zones take in many other considerations as well, such as elevation, humidty levels, wind velocity, proximity to large bodies of water and other factors. Additional feeding and overwatering is not likely to be helpful after the interior cellular structured has been damaged. Shading the plants may help decrease the severity of the loss.
