I have an existing flock in my backyard with 3 hens. I sectioned off 1/4 of the run for 1 week and put 2 new hens (age approx. 17 weeks) for 1 week. Then, at night I put the new hens into the coup with the others. It has been two hours this morning and the old ones are attacking the new ones pretty hard and do not seem to be letting them out of the coup. When they try to get down, the three come and attack them. They then retreat up to the coup and the old ones leave them alone there. Don't know if it matters, but all the hens are Red Star.
Is this normal? Did I do something wrong? Will the new ones go down to eat and drink?
I know so little about chickens (but I seem to really enjoy the eggs). :)
Thank you for your help.

introducing new hens into flock
What is the age difference between the hens?
The older ones are about 30 weeks old and the new ones are about 17 weeks old.
Thanks,
Scott
They have to establish a pecking order. It isn't always pretty, but I think it is pretty normal.
As long as there isn't blood, and you provide a space for the new chickens to hide or get away, I think they will be okay.
Good thinking about making sure they get food.
When I introduced all my chickens, it was a little testy at first.
But I think that yours will settle down okay. Give it some time.
