How long does it usually take to get blooms on a brug?

Cincinnati, OH

I wondered how long it may take for blooms to form on brug cutting. I have a few, and I know not to expect anything for a while. Seeds take a couple of years, but I am curious.......what is your observation?

Gosh, there are so many variables it is impossible to say. Also I have found cuttings from above the Y can bloom real fast, like in a month (not the rule) especially if they were about to bloom before they were cut off the mother plant. Cuttings from below the Y can take up to a year or even longer. Also the size of the cutting seems to affect it also, if you get a skinny little thing, it will take longer.

If all a brug's needs are met, it will bloom much faster. Genetics also plays a big part, some bloom much faster than others. I find they need enough sunlight too to bloom. I have come to the conclusion by watching them, that you can't make them bloom faster (Messenger may make them bloom faster) than their internal clock is set but you sure can delay blooming by insufficient care.

Also if you get them in early spring you have a much better chance of them blooming in fewer months for they are quality months then if you get them in fall and they have to go thru all the months of winter unless you have a great GH.

So now that I have confused you, I will say I look for them to bloom in about a year for a small one but if a good size cutting with the Y attached, in 1 to 2 months if it all takes place in spring to summer! If they dawdle too long I may consider that as a bad genetic trait. I suspect it will vary with people depending on the care they give.

I had several already bloom in 5 weeks from potting up this summer but they were big cuttings with intact Ys.

Seedlings can take 4 months (unusual) to up to 2 years though most are about 1 year or so. I have 1 that is on its 3rd year (unusual) and not a Y in sight. It hates me.

I am sure others have had different experiences than I have had in mild, not too hot California.

Good luck with yours, KayKay!!
