These lilys have around a 2ft leaf and the flower is about 1ft wide. Very pretty. Does anyone know what kind it is? Thanks John
Lily seed pods
John,
I believe you have some lotus there. Dont know what kind thou.
Beck
Also If you are willing to share I would love some. I dont have any lotus yet.
Thanks
Beck
Beck, not positive but I don't think Lotus will survive your winters, you'd have to bring it in. I'm in Z7 & it's marginal here. Bj
Hi,
I have grown lotus from seed. For winter just sunk them down into the pond and bring them back up for summer with positive results :)
Ofcourse it would be something I would have to bring in.....LOL.... guess I will have to make hubbby move his motorcycle out of the garage....LOL.... Dont think he'll go for that. However I do have a 3 bedroom house and only use 1 thank goodness for that.
Thanks for the info tootsie our pond is 4ft deep so I sould be ok??
Beck
Tootsie, that is great news as you are way colder than we are & I have always wanted Lotus! My neighbor has had ponds for some time brings his in. Now I guess I'll get some! My natural pond is 5 ft deep & the koi pond I'm working on will be deeper than that. We have to make our ponds deep or else you feed your prize fish to the raccoons! Thank-x for the info! Bj
OH yiiiikes poor fishies. I am glad I dont have any worries. However I did see a blue heron in the sky alot this year. Hopefuly my pond is to small for him. Have a Lake close by so maybe he will stay over there.
Beck
My "mud" pond is only 10' X 25 maybe 30' & they have been in there before. Luckily my dog chases any tresspasser off. (only in the day tho) She's in the house @ night, too many critters out there at night!
Well darn, something killed my beautiful Koi :( Yep, I saw something orange and white at the far end of the pond, so I ran like crazy to see?? Ugh, there it was out of the pond lying there(the pond sides are all grad not straight! I felt so bad! It's tail was torn off and in front of the head? It looked as tho it just swam right up the incline, but it didn't! I saw two birds the day before I left, one was a heron and the other a cormorant! I scared the heron away, but only saw the cormorant when the heron flew away!
I have tried the flag things, the silver photo image banners, 12 pairs of mated ducks with sinkers, but long enough leads so they can swim around a bit(they are plastic), I just used the fishing line and wooden stakes around 1/2 of the pond, the first line is right at the edge and the second line is 12" down! I ran out of steam before I could get the rest of the pond done. It measures 160 ft. X 60 ft. X12ft. now that the water has receded a lot this summer! I don't live at that house to it's harder to see what goes on all the time! I even wondered if a racoon had been there?? I did see a muskrat in the pond helping itself to the catails I have planted around the side! Anyone else have any thoughts on what else?? I did not see the holes that are usually poked in the fish.
Try a 22, a little lead in their ear & they stop fishing! Just kidding!
I have been told that if you get a life sized statue of a Heron that they are very territorial & won't come to a pond where there is one already (unless of course they are looking for a mate, & then you might have a problem!!! LOL)
Thanks, BJ, I too have heard that same thing! I think some lead did manage to find it's way into a few ears tho! The first thing in the early morning is the sound of guns going off!! And on the weekends, WOW, sounds like the military have landed and the battle has begun! Many people around that house also have ponds and looks like a few nice fish too!! No wonder the darn things are flocking to MY pond! Guess I will head out to the sports store and look for a mated pair of those darn #$%^%$## herson, and then I should have my bases covered :)
You don't want to bring that lotus in the house!!! Maybe Charlotteda will come along and tell you why. LOL
At four feet deep, your pond should be fine.
If you drop it down in the pond (and the pond does not freeze), it has much better chances out there.
Hi tootsie! Sorry to hear about your fish?
Sorry to tell you, but a fake heron won't deter the heron coming to your pond!
I had heard the same tale and purchased a realistic looking heron on the edge of my small pond. One morning I went out to feed the fish and they were all gone. Later that day, my neighbor told me they saw a large heron perched on the arbor above my pond, earlier that morning.
So, save your money, unless you just want a pretty ornament for your pond. :-)
Donna
Forgot to say those are definately lotus pods. :)
Hi all
John I got the seeds today. I will have to look up what to do with them now....LOL
Thanks
Beck
Hi Badseed and Donna,
I was investigating a little further and read about getting a mated pair of herons for the pond! I guess when my back and knees get better I will just finsih with the fishing line around the rest of the pond!....AND POLISH MY QUIX DRAW MCGRAW SKILLS, LOL
Shootem straight tootsie. lol
