Hi...
A friend of mine gave me this plumeria cutting she has been tending to for a few months...she had no room for it on her porch and knew I'd do my best to make it a good home.
I'm reading up on how to care for them, because this is my first plumeria plant to grow. She says it's a cutting from a yellow/white plumeria plant. I love plumerias just have never tried to grow them myself before.
I just wanted to post a pic!
I guess my biggest concern is how to tend to this plant in the winter months here...I'm in San Diego CA where the winters don't get very cold (40s at the worst, rarely frost where I live) but sometimes get very wet. This year I've just really gotten into succulents and now this nice tropical plumeria -- I'm wondering if I need to plan on an inside location for all my plants when things get really cold and wet. What do you all do???
Thanks!!
Kim...still a newbie in all this! :)
First plumeria!

Thanks for the nice welcome! I have not read the FAQs yet, I'm about to start right after posting this.
As for the tears on the leaves...I asked my friend about that and she said she had it on the balcony of her apt. where lots of people and pets come & go through the day so it has taken some abuse. She is limited on the # of plants she can fit in that small space...thus it's relocation to my home where I have LOTS of space for things to grow undisturbed :)
thanks again...to you too Malestrom...i'm looking forward to getting to know everyone...and sharing more pix!
I think I love Robert. I did all that work on the FAQ's, and I don't think anyone reads it! LOL! Welcome, IslandGurl! You are a lucky gal to receive such a gift. Plumerias love good drainage so make sure that pot has lots of big drainage holes. If it is a yellow/white, it is probably a Celadine, which is pretty impossible to kill so no worries, Mate! It sounds like you are in an ideal climate for growing them. If it stays above 35 during the winter, you can leave yours out all year long. Some people in climates like ours water them a lot less and let them go dormant for the winter. If they go dormant, they will lose their leaves and go to sleep. If this happens, you want to make sure that rain does not flood the pot. You'll want to keep it against the house under an overhang or somewhere protected. My plumerias don't go dormant during winter and don't lose their leaves, and I water and lightly fertilize during winter. When it rains, they get rained on, but they have good drainage so I don't worry. Oh, and be sure to read the FAQ's and welcome again!
Edited to fix spelling.

Number one caution is ROOT ROT from too much watering! I've got my first two plumerias growing in small pots, and they're putting out leaves. Do not drown them in water or they will develop ROOT ROT! Watch the rain, and take the "Put them under an overhang" advice seriously....
Go to the FAQ post and read all about them. It's a WONDERFUL site, and THANK you to whoever put it together!! It was NOT IN VAIN!
I stayed and looked at ALLLLLLLLLLLL those pics of the different plumeria, to pick the ones I like most...
Welcome, welcome, welcome!
Oh Clare, I read every word on your amazingly well prepared Sticky Notes. Your levels of organization are miles beyond mine and I learned soooo much from them all.
But, you are so sweet, nice and helpful when someone has a question and it is just so much more personal asking you and the other experts directly via DG. So...............
No questions today, just wanted to say I appreciate all you do here. :-))))))
Ardesia, you are so sweet. You just made my day:-) Thank you for being here and for being so nice:-)
Edited to add: I forgot to say thank you to Gymgirl too!

I just wanted to post a big THANK YOU to Clare for putting together that FAQ stuff in the "sticky" section. OMG I just started reading it this morning before work and was HOOKED! Thank you for taking what must have took so much time to put it all together...I'm learning so much!!!
PS...and thank you to Gymgirl for the note about root rot. I worry SO much about all my plants when the rain starts...I'm actually building a shelving system now inside my family room off the yard to bring some of them in when the rain gets too bad this winter.
This is SO cool getting to meet you all...thanks again!
Ok..off I go to read more FAQs...I just got home from work! :)
Awe, that's so great, Kim. Thanks for saying that! It really was my pleasure to put it together, and it actually does need some more work, but I have to email Terry to find out if I can edit it.
It's great to meet you also. This forum is a wonderful place to hang out. Don't hesitate to ask questions either. There are many expert growers here who are always willing to help.
Welcome to Dave's and to the Plumie Forum:-)
