It's coming....

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Well, between the drought and the bugs I have had a heck of a time getting my brugs to flower. But I finally have a couple of buds that are about to open...God willing and the Creek don't rise.

Doesn't it make you feel like a child on chistmas eve?

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

oooh it won't be long now!

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

I can't wait...it is my very first brug. Plus, my sis crossed two of her brugs to get it and we have NO idea what it will look like.

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Almost! We had a big rain last night and one two days ago, so I sprayed the babies down again today....I wanna make sure they make it! The last time I had buds, they got eaten. Anyway, they are starting to unfurl a bit....

Close up of one showing a bit of white...not sure if it is the flower or if it is the anthers....

Bama...its a cross ....you're gonna have to call it ALABAMA ALLURE!! Can't wait to see that one!

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

ROFL! Good one.....I'm sure Bessie, Flossie, Bossie and Elsie would appreciate having a brug named after the hostess gifts they leave me.

Lonoke, AR(Zone 7b)

Well sure....all good hosts appreciate a "thank you"! ;-)

Doncha hate it when these brugs take forever to emerge from their hiding place? Where is that flower?

This has been a struggle. Not enough shade and too much drought has kept my two brugs from dong anything. One of them has not even made a "Y" yet. The other has made several "Y"s, but the buds have dropped from the drought or been eaten by bugs. I'm so happy to get them this far. LOL! I need to get some more BT to spray them with. Used the last of it yesterday..then we had a gullywasher last night. Of course, we have gullywashers in the forecast for the next week or so, so it might be a constant battle to keep the bugs from eating them up...

I think that next year I either need to plant a fast growing tree behind them so they get more shade, or I need to move them to the ONLY shady spot in the yard right now. Haven't decided which one would be best. I'd prefer to leave them where they are at as they are less likely to be seen by people who might want to pick the leaves, and flowers......but if it takes the tree too long to reach maturity, it could be a problem. The shed was supposed to have provided them with adequate afternoon shade, but it doesn't. Oh well, I've got a lot of stuff that is going to be playing musical gardens this fall or next spring.

OK, I am on bud watch too. I love this part, so close to seeing a brand new brug! Anything is possible.

Today's status report...starting to show a little more...still no hint of what is to come. Looks like there might be a trace of color on the tips of the petals...but it is too early to tell yet.

ALMOST there! Only one problem...both buds have a split in them. You can see the anthers poking out. Don't know if it is a result of the weather or if it is a result of the hybridization. Guess only time and future blooms will tell.

interesting split, is there only that one split that you can see on each bud?

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

OK, they sort of opened today. They are split between each section. Where it should be webbed, it comes up and makes a sort of separate petal. I tried to pull it out so you can see how odd it is.

And here is how it looks when I am not pulling it apart.

Very pretty Bama!

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

I just wish it wasn't all split like that. I don't think it is going to open right because of all the splits. Tomorrow should tell the tale, though. The colors are pretty, though...pale lemon yellow with white towards the ends.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

If the split is equal in length all the way around, I think it will be cool. I only know of 2 brugs that do that, and if yours opens fully, it will look neat.

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

THey have one split that is longer than the others...then the rest of the splits are equal length. My sis said it reminded her of the shredded white...except they aren't white. Can't wait till tomorrow to see how they look....

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

Well, at least they are interesting.....

Interesting the way the splits give it a star shape. But, then, the deeper splits have kept it from making a perfect star....especially on the first one. Ah well, they are like their momma...not quite perfect and a little 'off'. LOL!
