I am wondering about if you have to wait 3 weeks between messenger sprayings.
And I asked on another thread about epsom salts, but I didn't get an answer yet. I got some yesterday and I am wondering if I should use it on the brug with the leaf problem. Someone had said that it might be burn from too much fertilizer. It is possible that I did use too much and also I may have used some of that Bayer 3 in one that I now have read bad stuff about. I had some and now it is gone so I am not sure what I used it on. Anyway at this point would the epsom salts be a good idea or bad? Would another spraying of Messenger help or not? It could be just because it is so hot. I think we have been over 100 for 30 days.
And another question. How long does it take for the buds to go from little bitty to open?
Questions
OOO,,(not an expert here) don't know about messenger, but I learned the hard way not to spray insect spray on leaves... Or fertilize either. It didn't kill my brug, but it dropped almost all of the leaves. I use epsom salts, but only every 2 or 3 weeks. I think rain might make a difference too---we have had very little this summer. Nitrogen.. Good luck, Elaine
where are all the experts?
yardqueen, many of you fertilize too much. The nutrient Magnesia (Epsom salt) is part of every good fertilzer and should be given only, when the plant shows signs of defiency.
Brugmansias dont like the heat and most of them quit growing when it is too hot. During this time, they need less fertilzer. Spraying of boosters like Messenger during this time doesnt help at all.
Why do you want to spray Bayer 3? Are pests bothering your brugs and if they do, what kind of pests are they?
Monika you have some beautfull Brugs Regards Paul
yardqueen, your question about Messenger: It's my understanding that you don't have to wait three weeks to use it again. But from what Lisa with Edenbio told me.....using it more often probably wouldn't do much good.
Why are you wanting to use epsom salts? The only time I've used it is when my leaves on a brug have become light in color. It will green them up quickly.
There are many things that could cause your leaf problem. Do you have a pic? I haven't been on this forum in quite sometime, so if you posted it earlier then I would have missed it.
We have also been very hot (over 100*) for many weeks now. If I haven't learned anything else.....the one thing I know is true is this....never spray with chemicals/fertilizer in the heat of the day. You should always wait til late evening or very early morning to spray.
As far as how long it takes from tiny bud to bloom? LOL It will feel like forever.....could be as much as three weeks and maybe more. But it could also be much sooner. All the brugs are different....and their growing conditions also.
Good luck and hopefully we've helped a little with your questions.
BTW...I am NO way an expert! Way far from it!!! But I love my brugs, even more than the stupid mites...but right now it just doesn't look like it! LOL
Monika,
If Bayer 3 is a spray then I didn't use it. I used a product with the name Bayer and it said something about 2 or 3 in one so I thought it was what I had heard refered to negatively. Mine was a granular time release food. I have looked at the leaves with a magnifying glass and I don't see anything on them but I understand that you can't see broad mites. What are the symtoms of broad mites? I do see a green spider on it and it stays there at least it is there every day when I water. I suppose that could mean that it is feeding on something I can't see. But more that likely it is the long spell of 100 + temp and no rain. But we finally got a little rain today so maybe things will get better.
Brinda,
I was wanting to use epsom salts because the leaves are not as green as they should be. They have been pale ever since I got the plant. I had read about the epsom salts to make the leaves greener. It definately helped a small palm overnight!!!
This is my first experience with brugs and I just want to help it get better and bloom!

I'm in zone 8a and I agree with Monika re fert. We've had a severe drought here this growing season, a couple of years ago, it was too much rain. Well, I'm thinking that drought and maybe too much fert has caused a tinge of yellow around the leaves of some brugs, too little water, too much fert. I'm a newbie, so wadda I know, but I've never had such oddly yellow rims and spots on my plants, oh, the yellow is bright, and the rest of the green is 'perfect', a lovely shade of green, if it wasn't fighting those bright yellow rims. And, if there is such a thing, along with the drought, I have had almost zero pests in my garden - zero bugs or mildew/fungus, mildew. etc. Please, I'd love a moderate year, I am so longing for a little of this and that and not too much of any one thing. Ya know??!!

Monika is an Internationally known and respected Brugmansia Hybridizer from Germany. She's is the one who help so many people here at DG to get beautiful brugs and taught us how to care for them. She absolutely is the "Brugmansia Queen".

Judy,
I know!!! Ihave already discovered that. I did a search with "monika" and I have looked at her brug pictures and quite a few of her posts. Her brugs are awesome. ( I would settle for decent ones lol)
Sherry,
Snce this is my first year this frustration and worry is all I know. A lot of you raefer to yourselves as brug mommies. Well I feel like I have given birth to a teenager without getting to enjoy the pleasures of the sweet baby!! LOL

Carol, this year has been almost for all of us a bad year. Like you in the US, we had a terrible heat. I live in a mountain range at a altitude of 1800 ft but is was just as hot here as it was in the lower land. My brugs didnt grow anymore and when the weather changed two weeks ago, the temperatures dropped within 24hrs from 37°C down to 15°C, three nights even were as low as 4°C. Within a few days, all of the older leaves turned yellow and fell off. My brugs have many buds now and I hope to see them bloom before winter is here.
Yellow leaves on brugs has many reasons and this year, the main reason was the heat stress.
I use one fertilizer throughout the year. It has 16-8-22-3 Mgo + minors. When you use too much and/or different fertilizers at the same time, because others praise this or that fertilizer, it increases the salt concentration in the soil, which may be harmful to the roots but it also changes the ph-value of the soil. A too low or a too high ph-value makes it impossible for the plant to assimilate some of the important minors like Iron for instance. Iron defiency causes yellow leaves also and it looks similar to Magnesia (Epsom Salt) defiency.
My advice is to pick a quality fertilizer with the combination I mentioned and stick with it.
Monika, Thank you so much for your advice. I will try to find a fertilizer like that. You have given me hope that I may see blooms also when the weather cools down a little. This year has been very hot and dry, we water everyday but I guess it just does not make up for it. And there is nothing we can do about the heat. I will just do my best for my plants and hope it cools off soon.
Carol
