Pecan Tree Source

Does anyone know of a good mail-order source to buy pecan trees? I am having a hard time finding any that sell grafted varieties. Any info would be appreciated.

If I were you I would make sure they are not grafted - I bought one was fine the first 2 years then the next year it only grew below the graft - on these bad boys you sure do not want lose that much time.

I've 'lost' the graft on a few grafted pecans that I purchased and planted - but in retrospect, it was MY fault, due to over-amending the soil in the planting hole.

Seedling pecans are fine - and most have better branch structure than many grafted cultivars, but when planting seedlings, disease resistance, nut size and quality are all unknown entities, whereas with a grafted selection, you know, from the outset, what nut size and quality will be like, what diseases/pests are likely to be a problem, and typically, a grafted tree will come into production in half the time you'd have to wait for a seedling to grow through its juvenile period.

The problem I have with most grafted ones at nurseries is that they clip off the terminal bud. It's common practice and I don't understand why. Make sure to find one that has a good central leader and the form of the tree will be much better.
