They b's in the picture are Carib Queens i think, i bought it at Pop's nursery no id tag BIG fuzzy leaves. it's an old plant with gnarly exposed rhizome, it seems to respond well to my slicing pieces off for new plants (as do my other begonias).
Thanks for the invite to butterfly world, but I'm making a pilgrimage to Palm Orchid Hammock estate -my new church.
i'm trying to get together a bed of b paliata (sp?) like the bed at Fairchild next to the greenhouse.
Have a great time at Butterfly World
Please keep in touch with our thread.....
Maybe our group could go there for an outing. I sure would like it and I know several others would.
Hap
I'd love to go with a like-minded group who like to peruse the nursery SLOOOWWLY perhaps with sandwiches in hand?
they have events regularly which look very interesting (probably old news to many, new to me) @

i'm amazed with all the rain that we've been getting that my begonias in the ground, rhizomous and angel wing, haven't rotted away though i have been keeping plenty of breathing space between the ground adn the underside of plant and pruning any leaf rot i see.
i'm greener to tropical gardening than the plants so it'll be 'live and learn'.

Yippeeeee. Gots to go on a Tues. 10% off for me and all that I buy for my friends....YIPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEE
You are right about the slow part. Traveling with DH is a race to the finish. This group are SLOW and it is such a relief. Plus we always do lunch..
Would you care to go again in the next month or so?
Hap
Hi Hap:
Here's an idea for Sat/30th....... (at Palm Hammock..) "Success with Seeds" - Hands on Workshop - all materials provided - Cost $12.00 - Mr. Tim Anderson at 11:00 AM. I'm not sure if they're talking about begonias, kohleria, water plants-- whatever seeds i have a feeling they'll be from interesting plants. They provide tray, soil, labels, etc.
I would really like to go to the water garden lecture but i can't justify two visits in 2 weeks -- gas etc. (and it is very difficult if not impossible for me to leave empty handed).
Food for thought.

jmf,
To add fuel to your $ fire.....We usually car pool....hehe. so you may not be off the hook..
We will talk about it more...
All this talk about PHOE is making me so jealous!!! I sure hope you all have a blast!!
I just hope I get there sometime....
Hap
Oh WOW, I want to go to PHOE too after all you have said about it Lali.
Come on over girls....
Believe me, if I could just twinkle my nose like Samantha on Bewitched, I'd be there! - come to think of it, I'd twinkle my nose and create a big bag of money to spend there and then twinkle again for a bigger green house, yea.. that's it, a BIG glass house conservatory..... If only!! LOL.
When/if you all go, I sure hope you take photos! Tim is a very nice guy and has an amazing collection.
Tim, you are on a first name basis 3,000 miles away? Wow...
I was able to meet Tim this spring during the ABS convention, he was the chairman and everyone went to his nursery to shop and oogle, I'm so addicted that I went twice! how's that for a begonia-nut! His place is amazing and the entrance has some gorgeous plants and garden features.
somewhere here on the begonia forum is a long thread with photos.
I thought that it might be it. I wanted to go last year and somehow I missed it. Dern..
Happy_1, have you ever been to 'pop's nursery on University, south of stirling? he has a ramshackle shade house kind of weedy but also number of very pretty begonias, orchids stuffed in as well. there is angelwing with ruffled dark leaves (with white spots) at least 12foot tall. a tiny snip accidently fell off..
POHE is as remarkable as ever.
GM.
No I haven't for I rarely so S of Sterling. The guys I go to are all on Griffen or there abouts. Sure will check him out. Is is really called "Pop" and which side of the road is it on, or is it not hard to miss?
Begonia, 12'. That has to be a record. Shame about the snip. The plants in the back and sides of Living Colors do the same, (their garbage piles). I have had such fun picking over their garbage. Got some goodies too. Nothing spectacular, but so my fun to re-hab the unwanted.
Hope our group can get to POHE in a few months. Please stay tuned to our Galloping Gardener's thread so you can join us. What days/time are best for you?
Hap
Hi Hap:
Yeah 12' on the dark ruffled cane begonia was a little bit of an exaggeration, I went back today to buy some water plants for my water bowl (i bought some paris feather, sensitive plant, and some little floater that was soo cheap i couldn't say no). the cane begonia is probably about 8' but i won't go an inch shorter.
i walked around the place with someone i assume was pop or pops son . we talked some begonia, he gave me a few snips, i perused the trash with permission and look forward to some of the begonias that he's cultivating, an angel wing with deep green (almost looks black) and supposedly bright orange flowers sounds especially nice.
I'm going to do my best to be at the lecture on 9/30/06 "Success with Seeds" $12.50 at POHE. It is a gorgeous place, really a treat.
good gardening
jmf
Pop's has trash too. Now I GOTTA go....LOL
