My Favorite tree.
"Calliandra surinamensis" pink powder puff. I finally found another standard (usually its in a bushy form) which
is in a nice pot ready for my new garden. Great for filtered shade and an amazing display in bloom.

I just love adding to this area......well actually the Hilo Beauty is still in its pot . I use that spot to check how plants react before I figure where to plant them. So it always has the a plant de jour in the middle that I can keep an eye on. It's right by the front door and its easy to pick up something blooming to fill in when we have visitors, Cheating a little but very effective in the winter when people come from the cold North.

Great pics! In that third photo, there's a very dark stalk type plant in the middle right, is that burgundy leaf crinum?

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi azreno!! lol it looks like a ti to me, though I wish it were a Queen Emma....I really want one of those so bad!!

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

I have two.... and got both locally some time ago. They didnt know what they were and I got them for a deal. I thought they were both Crinum, but the one you see has been growing stalky like a Ti and loosing its lower leaves while the other is much fuller and not loosing leaves with a beautiful burgandy stripe on the purple leaf where the sun hits it. I have more picst home ill post later. Hoping its Crinum or at least one of each

Hi Tiger lol

I see that it's a ti now, very dark. I have a pot with 3 very dark tis going in the ground soon- I love those.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

absolutely gorgeous! those traveler's palms are amazing...makes mine feel so inadequate. how old are they? what is that cool stalk growing next to the hilo beauties? that's what you get to look at everytime you walk through the front door??!! i was gusessing crinum, but whatever it is you have there is awesome! thanks for sharing :o))

How about those bamboo stalks in your "plant du jour" picture. What variety is that? They look amazing. You have done an outstanding job there. Big sigh of envy here.

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

the stalks are actually palm trunks

Thanks everybody,
It's fun to show off your work.

Azreno....Well as you all know already they are both Ti, I figured as much but got my hopes up thinking maybe I had missed something. I never really liked Ti plants very much because I thought they always looked ratty with dead leaves untill i was standing talking in my garden with a friend from Hawaii and he justed started to peel away leaves from the bottom up . Right before my eyes the eyesore turned into an elegant burst of color, Now I know what to do with them I look for unusual colors.

Ardesia.....The trunks are from an Areca Palm. I have many around the garden as screens that I Iet get dense with new fronds but this one I keep trim inside so you can see the trunks.

Ashley....The travelers palms ( whhich are not palms at all I learned ) were big when we put them in. One first then the other 6 monts later. Although the leaves were tall the trunk was nowhere near the size they are now. But they have taken off since. I have tried unsucessfuly to remove huge pups a few times.

Heres a pic i found of the travelers palm in 2004 after 6 months in, the trunk doesnt even reach the top of the fence.

Heres a full picture of them now.Looking at them now I see they need a trim before a hurricane blows them over. its funny how you see things in pictures that you dont notice when your in the garden

Oh, yeah, very nice! I think ti plants get a bad wrap because a lot of people see them as houseplants that aren't getting enough sun, they're great looking plants!
