ID for a surprise ginger.

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

This guy got fried last year and died during the Hurricanes and I forgot all about it and had since planted another bouganvilla in its place. Anyway It's back and has been poking out for the sun and now has a bloom. It had a couple of little flowers(?) coming out of the bud (?) that have fallen off . Can anybody help ID it please.

Thanks Neil

Neil,
Looks like costus spicatus aka indianhead ginger to me.
I have tons of it growing in my garden. Once it is planted, even if I move it, it still comes back in the same place. Very touch little bugger!!!
But, the blooms are really cool!!!

I am guessing this is another ginger debate for the pros. I have always seen costus woodsonii sold as french kiss. The 2 pictures in the database look like 2 different plants to me, but far be it from me to judge, as I am just merely a gingerlover, no expert. Although, I have grown 50-plus varieties over the years, of which I have about 10 left due to the storm. My costus spicatus survived it all!! Stokes Tropicals had the same pictures at one time. Each bloom does not last very long, but it does bloom all the way from the bottom of the bract to the top.
Hope this helps, and I didn't start a debate/gingerwar!!! LOL!!!

Costus 'woodsonii' is french kiss and dwarf french kiss. spicatus is 'scaber', indianhead ginger' which is what you have. Common names make things too confusing :)
