Do any of you have any advice on when and how much to prune a Duranta Erecta skyflower? My particular cultivar is Geisha Girl. It's beautiful and has blooms almost continuously. but it's getting really huge and since it only blooms on terminal growth I thought I'd whack it back a bit. Just need to know how much and when to do it.
Durants, Pigeon Berry, Sky Flower
Well, I haven't pruned mine yet, but I know with bougies, if you wait too long the young growth get frost burnt very easily, so I wonder if duranta does the same thing. If it did then that would make now a good time to do some trimming so the young growth could harden off before any frosts hit.
This past year I waited until all danger of frost was past before pruning. It took the pruned portion forever to flower, even though the lower unpruned limbs were flowering profusely. I guess no matter when you prune you loose some bloom time. I didn't have any frost damage to mine, but with the fickle Texas weather you never know what to expect.
