This is maranta arundinacea variegata. I love the variagation. Related to canna, it has similar characteristics. Water abundantly and it will grow in sun or part shade. It grows from tubers.
Maranta arundinacea variegata
I love that, what zone is it hardy?
Where did you get it? It is outstanding and I might have to have one of those too.
I think it is hardy to zone 9. Living on the cusp of 8a and 8b I keep it in pots. I got mine from Buried-Treasure.net. It does bloom but I dont think I will see it bloom where I live. However, I grow it for the foliage. I also like that it will take part sun or sun.
Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh poo, they are sold out!
They will get more in the spring. I really like they way they grow, I intend to get more.
love it love it love it
I tried the canna stuttgart this year but they burned and got so tall they fell over. How tall does this get.
While regular arrowroot gets taller, up to 6 feet or so, I think the vareigated form does not get as tall, maybe two or three feet? I hear it can be grown inside also but have not tried it myself.
I was just thinking how awesome it would look planted in with my shell ginger.
Wow, that is beautiful. Is that something that needs partial shade or does it tolerate full sun? Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous....
Here the marantas grow really really well. I even tried them in full sun expecting them to burn...but they didn't....
How is that one different from the 'Mosaic"?
Gorgeous plant - I want to get one, but I'm zone 10 - think it will work? My relatives all live in Niceville - great town. I've been going there for 50+ years!
Ginger
Yes it is. I grew up in Fort Walton Beach but moved to Niceville to raise my kids. Great town, great schools, and just across the bridge from Destin and the beach. The best of all worlds. Small town flavor, nearby beach
Believe it or not Lisa, this is the first year I've grown it my self. The foliage is spectacular, but my only complaint is that it's water needs appear to be pretty high in full sun. I have 2 seperate beds, and will put up on "Your Treasures" on the site.
Overall, I think it's extremely underrated and unused. Mine all seem to be hovering in the 4' range. By the results I'm getting, I'd say morning sun in zones 9 or 10 and higher, and full sun in zone 8 and maybe 9a.
Bocaginger, it should work for you if you can plant it where it gets afternoon shade.
Chris
Ginger,
I think I have one for you.....
