Here is my H. sipitanguensis that has been hanging out in the new shade house...and blooming its' head off. The color has become a deep bronze and look at the difference in the size/shape of the leaves - Those in the greenhouse are all a uniform shape (smaller size) and a deep green.
Interesting leaf change
Hi Carol,
So I assume it's getting more sun in the shadehouse? You think "shade" house would mean less.
Can you explain this one? I got an aff. anulata from you this spring. It sits in an east window in my GH, which means it's getting good morning sun, some shaded mid-day sun, only reflected light in the afternoon. Here's a pic of the new leaves. When these new leaves started developing, I thought they were yellowing and going to drop, but they seem to be keeping this weird pattern and growing. Have you seen this before?

Denise - I have plants of that H. aff. anulata that do the same thing! No clue why - except I suspect it is the sunlight even tho my plant in the deep shade has some of the same leaves...not as many. Ted Green commented that he gets the same leaf distortion on the same species. I had it tested for virus...negative! Sure is a free spirit, isn't it.
The 'shade' house plants get direct sun thru a 75% shade cloth while the GH is difused light caused by the opaque rounded shaped plastic covered by shade cloth and the H. sipitanguensis in the GH are on the shadier side. I think the light in the 'shade' house is more like "under a tree" so the plants are tending to grow "bush" (more wild). Since the rain get thru the shade cloth, I have had to move some back in the GH where I can control the water more... I find the very full pots can be sometimes dry even tho it has rained for 4 days...the leaves forming a canopy over the pot! Those without a full canopy can get a bit soggy and I have to change the medium to put more cinder and perlite in it.
Thanks, Carol. I won't worry about it then!
