'Black Stem'?

Robert.

Louisville, KY

young mac from what I can tell but thats hard to say.

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

I usually end up gardening after work past sunset , I'll try to get a picture of the mother tomorrow in the daylight. I would say the stem is more purple.

Louisville, KY

If the stem is red or dark it would most likely be Alocasia rubra Macrorrhiza a red stem form. It would help out a lot if you knew were it was from? It would be very hard to ID until mature unless you know were you got it? It is definatly a Alocasia and the only common dark stems forms I have seen are Mac Rubra and Odora purple stem form and plumbea . Here is a pic of Alocasia mac rubra. This is my plant and it would be sometime before you could tell if this is the same as yours. .

Thanks Brian
Before I joined DG I bought a whole load of EEs at HD one day , to fill one area of the garden. Before I knew it they were every where. I never knew there were so many different named ones untill I followed your threads. Most of mine are one of three types although the same one can look completely different, in different areas of the garden with varied conditions. Im going to get some pics and see if i can finally name them all, would you mind helping.

Louisville, KY

Not at all show some good pics of leaves and stems and I should be able to ID most. This one is hard to ID it seems to be Mac from to me but so young to be positive on the ID

Aloc. Mac. Var babies , I just can never seem to get the mix of soil and light right , they do so well for a while and then look distressed. One was huge and then got three all white leaves and slowly wilted back to to a small plant again

Thank you so much "Oh knowledgable one".

BTW do you have a direct link for the P. Andreanum Melanochrysum

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

What is the difference between A plumbea metalica and A plumbea nigra?

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Im no expert but it seems they are both similar in dark green and burgandy stems where as the Nigra (aka Indica) has waxy green glossy leaves the Metalica has a Metalic sheen quaility with a pewter shade under leaf. I'll have to check mine again as one has less metali c color than the other, Maybe i have one of each .

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Mine seems to have a purplish back of leaf and stems, front of leaf is dark green with purplish veins. I can't take a photo right now, all batteries are recharging.

Louisville, KY

They are the same Metallica was a horticulture name given to the plant to help it sell better. Plumbea is its true species name. Their are a few forms with white stems pink stems and some variegations. I have grown them all and in most cases non are truely stable they will go from one end to the next the most stable is the darker forms which rarely produce the lighter colors.

Here is a pic of a normal dark form

Here is a pic of one with white stems to pink. Usually this form will produce some variegated leaves.
