CLOSED: Reusing shipping boxes

Springfield, MO(Zone 6a)

I'm sure this is old news to some, but it wasn't to me. I took three boxes full of Bromeliads for DG members to the Post Office today. One box was a Pennzoil, one from a winery, and the third from another type of liquor. Three strikes and I'm out. If the box states that it (used to) contain liquor, bleach, oil, (or I'm sure several other taboo substances) they will not accept it. (This was USPS - I don't know about UPS). The clerks told me that the law states that if the box says any such thing then they must assume that is what's inside it. Anyone know about UPS?

So, I brought the boxes back home and spray painted them so none of the "offending" language remained. Being nice and hot today, the paint dried rapidly and a quick return to the Post Office and my packages were on the way.
Dave.

p.s. anyone looking for Bromeliads? I have 220 varieties, lots of duplicates, and will need considerably more greenhouse space this Fall than I have. I'm always looking for unusual plants of any kind - not rare - just wierd.

Dave...due to the idiosyncrasies associated with the USPS, I always obliterate any writing on the outside of a reused box.

It just saves me some grief once I make it to the post office.

You could keep some brown, postal wrapping-paper on hand, to wrap the boxes in. They probably sell it at the USPS. It's also probably cheaper online. ;)

Maysville, MO(Zone 5a)

Or.....go to the USPS website and orderPriority Mail boxes. They're free and they deliver them to your door.

But, then what would they do with their old oil, liquor, and bleach boxes? =)

Maysville, MO(Zone 5a)

Send them to me, I'll come down to the Washington area of Missouri, and fill them with some of the finest wines ever fermented!!!!!!

Washington, MO(Zone 6a)

Heh. Where's Maysville? And, you'd be hard pressed to show me a tastier wine than a Vignoles from either Bommarito or Puchta wineries. =)

We're about 30 miles east of St. Joe....or about 50 miles straight north of K.C. And what a coincidence! Vignoles has been my favorite from Stone Hill, then Mt. Pleasant when Stone Hill started changing their tastings because of all the college kids.......they really messed it up. You're right though, Vignoles is a winner, and Seyval Blanc is a close second! We use to stay in Hermann, but stay in Washington now because of the convenience to Mt. Pleasant and other wineries......Adam Puchta? Never heard of it. LOL........take care and happy gardening.....Jay

Apparently boxes from diapers are toxic too. LOL My hubby had to stand behind a lady at the post office yesterday while a clerk read every ingredient on the diaper box. She told the lady in the future to cross off every ingredient that was not in the box. She did take the box but there really did read the entire box first.

The USPS site is pretty easy to use and I order all the sizes I commonly use and sometimes a few others for odd stuff. They are free and they deliver to your house, usually in a week or less.

Moonlighter..

Adam Puchta winery is the oldest in Missouri (1855). I'm on the fence on whose Vignoles I like better, between the two I mentioned. I know I like Puchta's price better, heh. It's about 2 miles further outside Hermann than Stone Hill. Both off the same highway. Next time you're up there, definately check them out. =)
