rice paper plants get tall!

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Here is one of my rice paper plants (tetrapanax papyrifera ). It is getting really tall. A lot of people dont like to grow them because they send out so many babies, but I love the prehistoric look of them.

Hi rylaff,
Love the plant. I've tried growing from seed back in the spring but i'm still waiting. I've heard once established it will take my English winter and keep coming up from ground level each year.
Does anyone have any seeds they would trade with me all the way to the Uk?
I'd love to have another go, also if anyone has any tips on getting them started.
Thanks

Mike

I love rice paper plant. mine are planted inground, mostly shade, but I'm not sure they're getting enough water or if it's just too hot here. Kinda struggling right how. Yours is absolutely gorgeous.

How do you keep them from taking over.
They are horribly invasive; around here once you have them you and your neighbors will always have them.

BTW, they are awesome and I wish I could chance growing them.

that is why some choose not to grow them. I just dig em up and use them for trading material.

this is mine about a month ago and it is bigger when my batteries get charged i will go take an up-to-date pic of it,i love this and i think i got it from rylaff.yes mine is growing runners everywhere but i do trade mine as well but if you keep them picked off they wont get out of control. mine is in full sun from like 12 or 1 p.m. until the sun goes down and it grows tall but i love it,this is as close to the gunneria as you can get.

Hey Lisa! I still have the one you sent me a couple of years ago. It's not nearly as big as yours but happily slept the winter in the garage in a pot and is still going strong. :O)

The one I got from Lisa last spring is around 5ft. tall. I have it in a pot and it has 3 babies. I kept it in the GH last winter and it will go back in this winter. I love it. Thanks again for it Lisa.
