My celosia this year, have self-seeded. The way I see it, I keep getting new free plants, at staggered times. How convenient to fill in any spaces in the garden. This photo shows the seedlings in one area, photo taken yesterday. I must have about 75-100 tiny celosia plants! I showed an neighbor, and I convinced her to toss the old blooms in the garden as she deadheads. I understand that many varieties are not like the parents, but these offspring are very attractive in a different way. They have these very long flower heads (bracts, panicles?) that have an eye-catching funky appearance. They are offspring of Fresh Look Red. I have really grown to love these volunteers. Perhaps it is the stress of heat this summer, that the plants try hard to reproduce, but I have had more volunteers that include melampodium, gomphrena zinnia(although some of the babies are weird flowers), portulaca, etc. Has anyone noticed more volunteers from seed this year? Does anyone have varieties that make offspring that are different from the parents, but nice in their own way? Just curious. Yours in Gardening, tosaho. AKA TexasGardenGal
Volunteers/ self seeding in the garden.
Mine do that too, nothing like free plants.
Turk's Cap is another that seeds freely in my garden
I don't think you can post 2 pics at a time unless it's a collage, not sure if that's what it's called. I've seen them in other threads.
The free program Picasa from Google will do collages. Many on the Daylily Forum use it and post amazing photos. I have downloaded the program, but I have not had time to experiment and learn to use it. Maybe next winter! :>)) http://picasa.google.com/
I like the funky offspring better than the original plant! *giggle
