Philodendron "Rising Sun"

Key West, FL(Zone 11)

Here's a new Philodendron in my collection, "Rising Sun"a la Brian Williams. The new leaves are pale yellow turning to an almost lime green as they mature. You can see a new leaf just popping out the top. The little Gloriosum is a from a cutting I made on my larger plant as I was nursing it back from near death. It needed a home and fit in just nicely for now but I was wondering if philodendrons are restricted in leaf size by the pot they are grown in. All my new Gloriosum leaves on the main plant come out huge and slowly are replacing the burnt ones. I'd love to keep this one small

If you give it a totem it will climb up it and produce larger more mature like leaves. If not given a totem it will produce smaller leaves and usually vine out more. If you give it a lot of sun you can get almost solid white leaves. I dont have much problem with it burning in bright areas but in darker areas it will get darker leaves that are less attractive than the super bright yellow.

Thanks Brian,
where exactly do I find totems, I looked on line and had no luck. Im planning a move in the 6 months so Im happy to keep it managable right now in a small pot but hope to have a philodendron area in my new garden and I'll want them climbing everywhere. This one has a dead song of India trunk to start with. What about the gloriosum, can i keep it small also.

You can keep the gloriosum small in a smaller pot but it will adventually want out and want to get bigger. It is not a climber and looks very impressive in a shallow wide pot. As for totems I have used tons of items from old pieces of fence boards to drift wood spaghnum moss filled wire tubes and coco fiber made forms. They all work well depending on one thing and that is how much water you can give your plant. If you plan to water only a few times a week and have low humidity you would want a totem that holds a lot of moisture. The wood totems work well under mist were my plants get mist every half hour for 10 seconds. They stay damp and the plants go crazy. The spaghnum moss totem holds the most water but are hard to construct and cost a bit to build.

After a long search I found a moss totem supplier and you can add to it as the plant grows, seems like an easy option for me.
