I am in Dover, Delaware and have a small collection of old heirloom shrubs-old pretty hydrangeas, carolina allspice, etc . They bolted with all the extra rain this year and will need pruning this fall. I have no idea where to start.
Cany you help?
Peggy
the photo is the carolina allspice-has a wonderful fragrance and came with me from the blue ridge mountains 26 years ago.
Pruning shrubs help
Carolina allspice- If it's growing well, I think you can cut all you want. and anytime. Mine is bigger every year and creeps out underground too. Called Bubby bush by my Charlotte NC relatives. Remembered by my mom and M I L from chilhood.
Thanks, our family called it bubby rose-but I thought no one would recognize it by that! Mine is blooming again now. Mine was in my grandmothers yard..

For your other things, I guess you need a reference. Usually it's safe to prune shortly after the flowers are done. Then it will regow for some part of the year and form the next cycle of buds.
Maybe if you list what you have, you'll get the answers on certain bushes
I don't have hydrangea but think I've heard that you prune that differentl so I wouldn't cut much there until you have the specifics.
Coincidentally, my neighbor Peg on Bodon Court moved to DE a few years ago....... is it a small world r just not a rare name?
Here is an excellent site for hydrangea Questions, it's in my "favorites"

Have fun.
