Help! Help! Help Please!

Someone can give me advice against fleas? I have no pets. The last pet that lived in the house died in 2001 and we never had fleas while "Peaches" our pet was living. We don't have any kind of pets. The other day I came to the basement in my barefoot. I was surprised that a more than a dozen of very tiny insects came to my feet and ankle and they stung. I tried to kill them but they jump. My husband went to Home Depot and bought two 32 oz. of spray of some sort. He spent one bottle of spray in the area where I found the fleas. Next day I went to the utility room and the fleas were there. My husband spent the other bottle in the utlitity room and adjacent areas. Two days later the fleas came upstairs. My husband bought a gallon of the spray and sprayed the whole house. The fleas are less but still we found some upstairs and downstairs. I do not want to call the exterminator because is expensive in this area. I could not find a place where to post this because I do not have pets so I posted in Clutter. Someone advice me to post it in pets.

If someone knows a good home remedy or something that I can find in the pet store or Home Depot or any place else please let me know the name of the liquid of powder that I need to buy to kill this persistent insects, I will appreciate it.
