What in the world can I use to get rid og grasshoppers they love the leaves on my brugs and other plants..

Help Grasshoppers are eating my brugs
I sympathize with you about the grasshoppers. I only have one brug (Charles Grimaldi) and it is chewed to the bone. I've tried everything to get rid of them and nothing works. It's the only plant they seem to like.
The grasshoppers on mine are very small...maybe two inches max. But they have voracious appetites. When I spray, they just fly away and come back later.
Systemics don't seem to bother them one bit. They eat the flowers as well.
Speaking of blooms, this year it has produced the least amount ever. Maybe because of all the heat and humidity????
I use sevin Paul
I just got some I will dust the plants tomorrow.
Elva
Jumps in among Emh48 s Brugs starts hiting the hoopers with his baseball bat LOL regards Paul
LOL Paul !
I tend to use a shotgun....brugs are shot anyway....LOL
There's an organic product called NoLo, it's more of a bait and works slower than chemicals, but better in the long run. It's nontoxic to humans, birds, mammals and fish. It's only specific to grasshoppers and closely related species like crickets.
I don't like those buggers either, they have huge appetites.
What a shame Elva, I know how much you love your brugs.
NoLo sounds good Fly_girl. Maybe if applied early in the season it would really help.
I don't have grasshoppers here, I think. Every year I see one bug in my yard that may be one. I never kill it because I am not sure if it is good or bad. And besides, it is too big to really kill without lots of guilt. Anyone know if it is a bad grasshopper?
dont know that one ours a big and yellow they come from texas
I think the only thing that really works is two brick. Just a little labor intense. We have had them really bad for several years. However, this year they are down to just a few. They still do the damage. There is nothing here that they won't eat even bark on cedar fence posts.
Kim
Two Brick? You hit theam with Bricks?
when I catch which isnt often , I just get them between two of my fingers and
kill them they are small tho I do have some like kells and when I can catch they killed also ! They do a lot of damage on all the plants...
Yes Kell I do love my brugs and my ee and everything esle I plant. getting ready to plant some tomatoe plants tomorrow and also some pepper plants....
Some more brugs, orange tecoma sans , a double red hibisus and a couple more plants I just got. I also have to pot up some rooted brugs cuttings and get the ones in the bubbler out and pot them also. get the bubbler ready for more cuttings I have coming. My DH is doing the weeding so all is pretty well caught up.

Kell....trust me...it's a BAD grasshopper.......kill it !!!! They turn pink when you put them in alcohol. Oh boy!!! A science project!!!!
I would say it probably just laid a bazillion eggs.
I'm having a problem with the grasshoppers too, Elva. Along with the cats.
Grasshoppers? these are at least 2" long, they can eat a leaf or bud in no time flat. I took pictures of these two then knocked them off and smashed them flat. I usually can't catch them, but these two were rather........occupied. This was last week.
Kell, that doesn't look like any of my grasshoppers.I'm not sure what it is.
Bloom, a brick sounds rather nice right now. or Phicks a baseball bat...I was just outside talking on my cell phone to my sister, walking around the yard and I saw 2 more - this same position - on my dahlias. I finished talking and used my cell phone to knock them to the ground. I killed them with my phone. LOL. I hate these things. Some of my dahlia buds are half eaten. They still bloom, but are only half blooms. they look kind of sad.
I hate using insecticide because I may damage some good bugs.
those look just like the ones I have. I hate them.lol
Kell, that is a Katydid, and they also eat brugs!
FWIW, Lowe's has the biggest crop of grasshoppers I've ever seen, they are ALL over their plants, I have never in my life seen as many grasshoppers at one time, unbelievable...
Somewhere I read - you take a 2x4 or PVC pipe , paint it and put the yellow sticky stuff - tanglefoot on it in about 1 inch stripes - I think it was green color but can't find article . Maybe someone in garden foes knows . Post there .
Kell! Repeat after me: ALL GRASSHOPPERS ARE BAD! ALL GRASS-HOPPERS ARE BAD! ALL GRASSHOPPERS ARE BAD!
LOL!
Kay
Marie, those are really gross!! And, I don't know if they lay eggs or have babies, but I am sure you are going to get a big load of one or the other from the looks of what they are doing.

I'm in southeast Arky and there used to be tons of grasshoppers in this area, they 'gathered' down town and broke into stores and were known to eat carpet, clothing, towels, etc. I had never heard of anything like that but later learned that it was common. But, we seldom see a grasshopper these days...that is not a brag, but a sigh of relief!
I have used this the last two years.
Semaspore Grasshopper Bait, Contains Nosema locustae, a naturally occurring disease that attacks over 100 species of grasshoppers. After eating Semaspore grasshoppers become sick, eat less, and begin to die. The disease spreads to other grasshoppers through natural cannibalism. In 2-4 weeks, 50% of the grasshopper population will die, and most survivors will be infected to continue spreading the disease. Infected survivors eat 25% that of healthy grasshoppers and lay 60-80% fewer eggs. The disease also carries over at least another year. Will not harm humans, pets or wildlife.
The first year we used it we found dead grasshoppers stuck to all kinds of plants.

Well, let me tell you my grasshopper tale from the past few years! Thank goodness, something has happened to them this year, I've seen just a couple--not complaining, just explaining! These things start out as droves of tiny black replicas of a grasshopper and by the end of the season they become HUGE aggressive creatures who will actually attempt to attack you when you disturb them, sounding like tiny dogs barking as they fight your disturbance.
For the past 3 summers they have destroyed my amaryllis bulbs and other fruit (like tomatoes), devouring large amounts, literally, overnight. They seem to be site specific, some of my neighbors are bothered with them, others are not.
Those of you who question the 2 brick method of dealing with grasshoppers would really be grossed out with my method of dealing with my monsters--I delight in pulling their heads off and letting them lie around as warnings to survivors in my garden.
This year, in addition to the devastating drought, the grasshopper numbers here on the ranch puts them in the plague category. I've learned more than I cared to about grasshoppers. I've wondered how many "generations" were layed in a year. It turns out that each new "generation" of baby grasshoppers is actually a different species. I must have dozens of different species feeding on my plants.
All, but a few of my Brugs, are down to stubs. The grasshoppers went after my citrus and apple trees first. After they ate all the leaves and bark, they attacked my roses next.... then ... then... So far, the only leaves grasshoppers don't seem to enjoy are the leaves on my Passiflora incarnata vines. They go after the flowers, but not the leaves.
The protozoan Nosema locustae is also used in NOLO Bait. The thing is that it is not fast acting and it has a limited shelf life. AND large areas have to be treated, Otherwise, grasshoppers in other areas will move in to fill the void.
This year, I feel like I'm the one between the two bricks. Will leafless little stubs survive the winter?
diatomacious earth applied with a duster works well also they eat it and die,not as effective as early treatments with nolo but fairly effective and it is non toxic kills earwigs and pill bugs also
Kell, I had one of these this week that I decided to let live! When I get back to the lake we'll see if he ate up everything!! I had never seen one like this before,
maybe he came from Cal. !!
Should I look for bricks?!!!
Bonnie
i take sevein put it in my sprayer and spray in the early eve and i dont see any hoppers for about 3 weeks Paul
gessieviolet
LOLROTFAPIMP!!! I can just see you making little tiny stakes to put the heads on as a warning.....
plantnutga
