Delonix regia-orange-need a cultivar name

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

I just saw this today on Oklahoma St couple blocks west of Mabry in Tampa. I have seen the red all over the place, I have seen the yellow, 'Flava' here in FL and Hawaii, but I have never seen this color. Anyone have a cultivar name, I would like to add this one to Plant Files.

Here is a close up of the flower. The tree had a few pods, but, no viable seed. Looks like it is sterile, which is true of the cultivar 'Flava' also. Not uncommon in the plant world when these mutants show up. I am going to contact the owner and see if I can make some air layers. It is more striking in color than the species.

It sure is striking in the pictures, too. Gorgeous color!

That one is absolutely beeyutiful dale! I'm envious.

I have a grafted yellow one from Puerto Rico and some seedlings from a red one from Malawi. I have seen other orange ones on the Internet but they are very infrequent.

Mine are all small seedlings or saplings. My yellow grafted one has been in the ground the past two seasons and is doing fine but is only about five feet tall. In the summer it seems to gain 1-2 feet and in the winter it seems to lose 1/2-1 foot. I know they have a few blooming ones here in various localities in SoCal, so I am hopeful.

Ron,

Here in Tampa we are on the very northern edge of this plants range. The red loses a lot of leaves in winter, not much in the way of 'die back' on the wood. I noticed this plant last winter and it had all its foilage, unlike the red ones I see around town it seemed more tolerant of the winter chill. I don't go down that street often, but I was really surprised today to see it in full bloom and it is later flowering than the red. The red one ones hardly ever flower here and when they do it is a sparse show. This one is very showy. I got a hit on this plant in the ID forum, but, it is simply know as 'orange' in the catalog and Top Tropicals has this one and the yellow 'Flava'. I am going to be down in the Miami area next week so Top Trop is on my list.

It is interesting to me that they are grafting these trees. Do you know the rootstock of your yellow? I am guessing you bought it that way.

Do you grow Tibouchina granulosa is SoCal? Here is one:

Dale, it's a beauty. Wonder why they're grafting it? I thought it was a strong, vigorous grower on it's own.

dale,

I don't know what the rootstock of the grafted Delonix is. Someone online steered me to the little Puerto Rico nursery a couple of years back.

I have seen pics of the Tibouchina granulosa. I know there is an Australian hybrid called Tibouchina Alstonville. Lovely tree.

I'm attempting to grow some other things from seed. One little tree that I really love and finally planted in the ground this Spring (altough it is still quite small) is Sibipiruna--Caesalpinia pluviosa v. peltophoroides. I think its my favorite right now...just for the foliage alone.

Gorgeous!!

Patootie, the red is a strong grower, but, sometimes the odd colored ones are not so great in the root department.

Ron, we use Caesalpinia pulcherrima alot here, and some of the others of that genus. I will have to investigate pluviosa, I don't know it. Hope it is in plant files.

I looked around and couldn't find a photo of that obscure caesalpinia. You guys might be interested to know I'm growing caesalpinia platyloba "palo colorado", and like your pluviosa Ron, the foliage is awesome! Huge, huge, huge leaves (for a caesalpinia LOL), I'll take a pic later when the sun is up. It gets yellow flowers, but mine is young and I snipped it's flowers this year- it was very newly planted from a 5 gal pot in the middle of an AZ summer, it's settled in wonderfully though.

Wow Dale that is a gorgeous tree and I have never seen the orange!
I love caesalpinia but am unfamilliar w/ platyloba "palo colorado" and pulviosa- you must provide photos!

Here's the foliage with my hand for size reference

And here's the tree itself, it's a native of Mexico BTW

Very nice! Does it flower?

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Yep, yellow ones, but I snipped them this year, so I will have to wait til next year unless it will bloom in the fall.

One of the orange/gold cultivars in Florida is called 'Smather's Gold'.

Isn't there a bright lemon one called 'Kampong Yellow' also?

I'll post a pic of Sibipiruna--I have to find it first.

azreno, love the foliage on the tree, but that wall is really cool!! and its high ( I think...), what is it made of?

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Thanks Tiger! That's our block wall, standard height- around 6', that we've put a faux rock finish over. We're going to do all the visible walls in the yard, so far we've gotten the walls that go behind our large pond, which is about 90' of wall. I just finished the color and this weekend the sealer goes on.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Did you do that faux finish yourself? and if so tell me how you did it! It does look wonderful and what a perfect look for Mesa! I lived in Tempe for several years, attended ASU- my former in-laws still live in Scottsdale and my former brother-in-law and his family live in Mesa. Sometimes I think about moving back but just saw a documentary where they talked about all the amazing, fast growth in the area and pointed out some of the negatives assocciated w/ that growth.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Yeah, the growth is not a good thing. Lots of beaurocratic crap going on and not a lot of forward thinking. But not a topic for here LOL It is a small world, though isn't!

Dale, I don't mean to hijack your thread here, so I'll start another one. You can look on the concrete and hypertufa forum, for it April.
