Brug diseases

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

I think with all the heat and drought going around I am finding that some of my brugs are suffering either from disease or bugs....Is there a place I can go to to find out whats going on with my babies....?...I have the Brugmansia and Datura book but there isnt alot in it to explain things going on with my brugs....Judy

Judy,

Take and post pictures here!! The most experienced brug growers are lurkers and they will come out to help you with your problems. You need to go over your brugs with a magnifying lens to help identify the insect, cut off leaves that are infested and burn them, or tie them off in a plastic bag for the trash collectors.

I've had so many problems with mine this year that I'm about ready to start trashing some of them. One more cutting off leaves and spraying with a different chemical and that is it!!! The ones who still have insects/problems are going in the burn pile.

Good Luck,

Judy

I use bayer systemic rose food .
Also spray with dish washing soap and / or Volek oil . spray in early evening so you don't burn plants [ sunburn ]
This year I switched to Neem oil . Alot of people here like it .

Judy I'm not a "hands on" plant disease expert but I can tell you what I've witnessed and learned thru the years.

The most common problems are listed here. If you research them on the internet you will find tons of info. I promise you'll be more confused after you do this than you are now lol!
Alternaria
Botrytis
Fusarium Wilt
Phoma
Phytophthora
Verticillium Wilt
at least 11 different viruses
Several different kinds of "stem blight"
and more

Some of these symptoms resemble each other which makes it impossible to diagnose with just pictures. Diseases and viruses vary from country to country.

Stem Blight should be used cautiously and as a generic term. When actually tested usually a combination of diseases is found not just a stem blight. In everything I've observed on the brug forums thru the years, and learned from every person I've talked to personally, I don't recall that any two people have had the same combinations of these diseases when properly diagnosed. Very rarely are these plants diagnosed as having only one kind of disease. Diagnoses by pictures only can be deceiving.

If you are having a serious problem it would be best if you contact your local Department of Agriculture and let them test your plants for you. Sometimes this service is free. Sometimes it is not. Sometimes these guys are on the ball and know what they are doing. Sometimes they are not as knowledgeable and helpful as they should be.

Hope this helps a little bit. :)
