Been tracking this guy for quite some time. Not the best picture but he never sits still!!
I Got me a Spicebush!!
Look like pretty good pics to me! That does it. I am planting the buddleia again ;-)
Thanks gram!
I won't ever be without buddleia, I have 7 of them planted along my fence, great for privacy and even better for the butterflies!!!
if you will make them a puddling place you should be able to get some pics a little easier.
I have a puddlin" place, with sand, salt and fish emulsion and have yet to see one critter land on it. Any suggestions? Karen
use just plain old dirt, red clay, old potting soil and keep it wet in a sunny spot. They like fresh doggie doo too lol
I was wondering about doing that. I see them a lot on the poo but am reluctant to snap the picture!!!
Donna,
I read this and had to laugh! If the flutterbyes will sit still on dog doo, I should have a yard full of them, thanks to my 3 furboys!
When I go outside and water lately, there's usually a bunch of snout butterflies that just follow me around the yard as I go around to water. They like to puddle where I've been watering. We've been having a drought for quite a while, so water is at a premium. El nino is back...but have we offended the rain gods again?
Congratulations on your Spicebush visitor (and the photo, too!). Very cute.
Do you have spicebushes around your property? I am wondering if they are a common garden or woodland plant?...
I made a gloriously icky puddling place for my BFs too, and got no takers. Still trying out new recipes for that. (I am reading Pyles' book on butterflies and he suggests tweaking the recipe until you get visitors.) Is it the frittilaries who love to muck around?
Thanks tabasco, no I don't have spicebushes. I only caught in quickly on the butterfly bush. I have seen him flying around on and of for about a month but never landing on anything. I guess he got hungry!!
Tabasco all the males puddles. They get minerals they need for breeding. Sometimes the females will too.
I wondered about the spicebush too. I have several planted around the woods edges and I've never seen anything on them at all much less a caterpillar.
Grampapa - if it's close enough to you, go up to Bluestone Perennials for a big selection of very cheap Buddleias. If not, they are unfortunately only offering those plants by mail for spring delivery.
