My name is alice and I am a messy plant keeper.
Most of my hibs are on my deck where I can enjoy them up close, etc. While cleaning and rearranging the plants this morning I spent most of my time scrubbing yucky spent hibiscus flowers off the deck. They fall where I don't see them and then they proceed to get real slimy then they bake onto the wood. By the time I get around to cleaning (as rarely as possible), the deck floor is pretty ugly.
I know some daylily growers go around every night and pick off that day's flowers. Does anyone do this with their hibs?
I haved a confession
I do snatch off those nasty looking things, Until I am ready for seed pods to develop then I leave them on til they fall off then pick them up and discard
Beck
Mine are mostly on grass or the driveway(gravel) so doesn't affect me much.
Kyle
i just let them be
lol...do I go around and pick them up? Oh, honey, if I remember to pick my daughter up from camp I figure I'm doing ok...;)
ROFL, :-))))))
TessC - ROTFLOL!!!! Me too, except I don't have a daughter, do I....
Judy
ROFL - again!
I do on my two trees and bush. Only because they are blooming very crazy, and I like to count just to see how many blooms they did have. Every now and then I do the same with all my 30+ hibiscus I have in pots.
30? WOW, what do you do with them in the winter? Do you have a GH for them?
Yes I have a Rion GH, and I love it. This year when I put the biggest tree in I will have to do some trimming. Last year it touched the top of the GH and I know this year it won't go in without being trimmed. It does loose most of its leaves and looks kinda funny because it bloomed all winter as well. I got this tree from Dillons. They only had three or four left at the middle of summer and they were slowly dying. So I got the $50 tree for $10. It is a winner, she has been putting on any where from 25 to 35 blooms a day for the last 3 weeks. I guess she likes the triple digit weather we have been having. Here is a close up of her.
That is a beautiful tree, 2pugs! Obviously she loves her sunny spot!
Linda, I've got one of those too, and it's doing exactly the same thing- you're right, it does love the heat. I've got one other that's the same, it's like the Energizer Bunny...lol. I do love my hybrids, but sometimes it's the workhorses that are the really remarkable ones!
Judy- I never thought of that! I'll have to get a little amnesia- "What? I have a daughter? Are you sure?" lol...
You have a beautiful bit of the tropics there in Kansas 2pugdogs.
Tess, it seems many of the older varieties not only bloom more but have more substance to the petals. They just seem less lush but much sturdier to me.
Exactly...so you know that that means, right? Gotta have some of ALL of the varieties. For scientific purposes, you understand...
2pugs, how old is that hib. tree? pretty outstanding.
Hmmmm, Tess, if we are "researching" hibiscus varieties don't you think the plants should be tax deductible? After all, it is all in the interest of science and edification; oops, I meant education.
I got the tree last summer and it was about 2 feet shorter then it is now, I don't really know how long it would take one to grow that tall. I'm pretty proud of it she is doing a great job for me. I rescued it from Dillon's it was about done for, there were 4 of them left and this was the best looking one of all of them. Of course at the same time I got my bush, which they sold to me for $5.00, the tree for $10.00. They were originally selling the trees for $50 and the bushes for $29.99. I brought them home and gave them both a real good drank of water with h2o2 in it and replanted them the next day. My bush needs to replanted again, but think I will wait until next spring.
Kyle would know how long it takes to grow a tree that size...
I pick up on the deck because my little dog likes to eat the hibiscus {fresh or fallen flowers and leaves. I don't know is she part Iguana?} and I have to discourage that behavior. The plants are all up on stands now where she can't reach the flowers or foliage but I pick up the drops and toss them over the side into my garden where they compost nicely. The rest are out of her reach along the driveway and I don't bother with those. Here is a picture of the nasty evildoer in an off moment
That nasty evildoer is just precious what breed is she. I know she's not a Iguana, you cleared that up.
