My friend so kindly is letting me take home part of a ginger plant that landscapers put in, and I was hoping someone could give me some tips. I've grown ginger before from roots I bought at the grocery store, cut and then let dry before planting... is it a similar process after digging up a plant? Do I have to let the bulb dry before replanting her plant? And how should I transport the bulb in my car for the 8+ hours in which it will stay in my car? (I'm pretty sure I shouldn't wrap it in wet paper towel, but I don't want it to die either.)
I'm also bringing home lots of cuttings, but I've done that successfully before :)
Anyway, any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Gina
dividing & travelling with a bulb
If it is on active growth, try to take some soil with it's roots in it. It may help to cut some of the canes/leaves off so as to reduce burden on the roots. Keep it moist and don't let it toast in the car with windows up in a parking lot. Take it and it's glob of soil and wrap with a plastic bag. The rhizome/roots ought to grow in your yard even if the leaves die from shock in transit. Plant it where you want it permanently as soon as you can. I hope this helps, good luck. Also try the relatively new Ginger forum.
