Butterfly Picnic

Pittsboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I think they had a picnic on my butterfly bush today. So many of them visited!

They just kept flitting about...

I even got some closeups...

Like this little one. He looks kind of like a fighter jet!

I found this hummingbird moth resting on one of the leaves.

Yeah, the fighter jet one! We had one yesterday and it stayed on my daughter's finger forever. Any clue what it is?

wow never seen the Hummingbird Clearwing resting, always going 90 mph lol. I see you have the Tiger and Dark Tiger female in the above pic

I think I just found its name, indiana_lily. It looks like a broad-winged skipper, Poanes viator. http://bugguide.net/node/view/27645

Yeah, Donna, I was sort of surprised to see it so still for so long! I fiddled with my camera for quite some time, since I'm still figuring it out. The clearwing sat real still for me and let me take its picture!

Yeppers! here's another pic... http://nctexasbirding.com/PviatorSpread2.jpg
I tried to get his picture but it didn't come out clear at all. Your pictures are all very good!

Great pics! Lucky you having all those Tigers! I'm thinking the same thing as Donna, never seen a Clearwing resting! cool!

Thanks, indiana_lily & konkreteblond! I can't really take full credit for the photos being so nice and clear; it's the camera. I'm still learning, and there are LOTS of pix that I have to delete because they aren't clear. Since I finally figured out how to get the darn thing to focus in macro mode, they've been turning out much better.

The tigers visit every day. There are usually several of them on the butterfly bush at one time, along with the smaller skippers and an occasional painted lady (that won't sit still long enough for me to photograph it) and bumblebees. The bush is right outside the window in the room where my computer sits, so I usually watch them from here, too.

Let me give you a HUGE piece of advice: delete your blurry pictures as soon as you upload them!! I take so many and just upload them and don't do anything to them and now I have tons of ones to delete and arrange. Ugh. Start now! especially since you are going to be highly addicted to it!

Good advice! I usually do delete the blurry ones as soon as I take them, but sometimes I'm just so "into it" that I don't. I need to delete a whole bunch from my 'puter, though. I uploaded them and left them as they were. So...I'm off to delete a bunch of yukky photos from the hard drive! LOL

You're right - it is addictive! I can't go outside now without my camera!
