Actually, it's a "gal".
I had one last year. It made & egg sac & I became a grandma this past spring.

The spider in my yard and most of the other photos show the colors black and yellow. What leads to the different colors, is it location, species, diet, what?

It may just be the lighting in the area when the picture was taken.
The spider that was in my yard sometimes appeared light yellow, sometimes darker. Same spider, different times of the day & lighting conditions.
