Question..

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

..I have these spots on my h. wallichi and h. verticilliata. Since I just used BATS on all my hoyas about two weeks ago, could this be a fungus/tinactin thing? The spots are brown and sporadic on the wallichi, but on the verticilliata, the spots "cover" the leaf, and are purple-ish?? Thanks for your help! Karen

Not sure, but I think that is a "too much light thing" My pubicalyx get like that if they got much sun on them. Also kerrii.

Karen...I get those purplish spots on the leaves of some that are in really bright light.... Annie could probably explain it better than I can...it has something to do, I think, with the light bringing out a red pigment (or 'thingy') in the leaf. The H. wallichii 'could' be fungus - what's BATS?

Carol, it is our adorable little way of saying Bayer Tree & Shrub (I confused people in another thread, earlier, calling it the same thing - it's easier to remember BATS than to remember BTAS).

Ahhhhhhhh - but of course! :>)

I think the purple spotting is the presence of phoshorous in very bright light. Most of my Hoyas will get it if they are at the upper threshold of their light tolerance. If you don't like it, I think it will fade if you move it to a shadier spot. However, the spotting does mean they will probably be more inclined to bloom in the bright light they're in.
I like it, myself. Pubicalyx cultivars get this really strongly, I think that's why their new leaves are so colorful in sun.

Ann, You're correct with BATS : Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insecticide

kinda looks or sounds better than BATAS or BATASI :)

(audible relieved sigh) Thanks for the info - as always, you guys are so willing to help us newbies, it is soooo appreciated! These two plants do get more light than others - and I'll think I'll keep them there if they are more inclined to bloom! Thanks again! Karen

BTW - the thin leafed hoyas like H. wallichii, coriacea, fraterna, praetoria etc. seem to be susceptible to cercosphora...a common fungus...or some other fungus....so a quick spray with a fungicide that contains Dipel helps alot. ...

And...it doesn't hurt if it ISN"T that.

Thanks Carol - I will give wallichi a spray. Karen
