CLOSED: green/yellow creamy "sherbert" rose mallow/hibiscus?

Thornville, OH

The blossums are hibiscus looking, five +" wide, burgandy hint at edges and solid rust colored base of petals....the leaves are just like the rare red hibiscus i had but was too cold for my area and too big to go indoors...seven points on the leaves and instead of a woody stem it's hard green color, blossoms graduate to the top, fewer at the bottom...any ideas? i'll have seeds soon, if you want some just send me a sase with two stamps with the word "sherbert" written on it somewhere....it just reminds me of a light mixed sherbert ice cream....and if you are interested in indian seeds three generations old from the same family of Cherokee i just mailed half of what i got to a friend and she will probably grow them for next year....the ladie's grandmother used to sit on the porch and rock and smoke a pipe. D-mail and i'll give you my friend's name here....mark

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I’m curious, does manihot come back in zone 6, does it reseed? I think that’s Mark’s zone in Ohio isn’t it? I have this question because I have one and was told it was manihot, but the flower is more like old yella and the plant files says manihot Z8b-11, old yella is Z5-9, but does old yella have the stickers on it like manihot, I haven’t found anything in the plant files that says it does….or doesn’t. On mine the petals aren't seperate, it's round like a dinner plate :)

Anybody know?

Mark, will you save me a few seed, just hold on to them cause I know I'm going to want more later, did you get your seed yet?
Lea

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

I have dozens of this hibiscus, I got a start from Brugie & I have so many I just let the seeds fall off & they come up by the hundreds. Mine are still in bloom & the pods are still green.

These are so easy to grow that I think they would grow on a sandy beach. They will come up in the lawn & I had to mow down hundreds of them.
Jerry.

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

Could you post a pic of the blooms?

Larkie

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Mark or Jerry,
Thank you for the seeds, Mark. With both of your experience with this hibiscus, It will need to overwinter inside, correct?

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

DEB... They are so easy to start from & they will grow a full 6ft tall by starting seed in the spring. You could just scatter them on the ground this fall & you will have them comming up everywhere.

Larkie..I am new to the computer & just got my printer hooked up, I had used web-tv for years & this is new to me. When I learn to use the camcorder with the printer then I could send pictures. ( My TV screen was my computer screen when I used the web & I have a 61" TV)

I have several different colors of hardy hibiscus & only 4 set seed this year. I have 200 roses & am not sure if I will pick seeds this year. I have been doing the roses for 35 years & grow a lot from cuttings & from seed.
Jerry.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

So, Jerry, are these hardy hibiscus and can stay in the ground year round? I'm in zone 8a.

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

mark, THANK YOU for your generosity!!!

Jan

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

Deb.. Hardy hibiscus will grow about anywhere, Here in Iowa it gets 10 to 20 below sometimes & they come up every year. They come up late & you think they died, But just wait & all at once they come up. I had one that came up about 1 month after all the others did & it is a new hibiscus called Plum Crazy, Beautiful purple flower with a blood red center but don't produce seeds.

Some hibiscus don't produce seeds & I am waiting for mine to finish blooming so I can send some cuttings. I have never tried cuttings of hardy hibiscus but if their anything like my roses you have wait until they finish blooming.
Jerry

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Thank you, I'm glad to know I won't have to dig them up to bring inside for the winter.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Mark, I got your seed. Thank You for you generosity!!! Have a blessed day.................Lauri

Lytle (near San Anto, TX(Zone 8b)

Mark,

I sent you d-mail. Was wondering something? I'm very familiar with seed collecting on most flowering plants, however, just how do you collect on the hibiscus? I have several "Rose of Sharon" (althea) hibiscus plant that I want to collect seeds for, but not sure how to go about it. I have several with lavender blooms with red colored throats and one light pink and two mauve colored double blooming plants. Once the blooms fade, they fall off and I've never seen any seed pods.

PS: Read your journal. Very interesting and sounds as though you have been through a great ordeal. I also think that so many of us people always just look at the negative side of things in our lives (the bad things that happen) and forget to count the good things as blessings.

God Bless,
Judy

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

sunnydove: regarding your R-O-S, I also have the lavender with the red eye/throat and it doesn't set seedpods as it is sterile. The only way would be to propagate by cuttings which I am doing and it is quite easy!

Jan

Prescott, AZ

Mark, I received my seeds, thank you so much. Be looking for a package next week.

Tami

Thornville, OH
