Lets liven things up a bit, shall we.

Been a might slow here in the Begonia group so I thought I'd post some photos. Sadly you can see the results of that 115º weather we had a few weeks ago. Many have tip burn. But I guess that's just cosmetic.

First up is a close up of new growth on Frosty Roundabout. (I think, have to go look at the tag again) Love the 'eye lashes'

Happy Monday All!

Here's begonia poponoei. For size comparison, the begonia in the pot on the left is a 4" pot. Those leaves are as big as dinner chargers. So, here's my question, this is doing remarkably well planted in the ground. I have two more in 1 gallon cans that aren't bad, but not as big as this. So what do we collectively think about that theory/advise that begonias like to be tight in their pot? I do have a high clay soil, but this area has been amended for 15 years so it's fairly nice. This is my largest leaf begonia, I have b. nelumbiifolia, but it's struggling at the moment. I think it has larger leaves in general.

Japanese painted fern in front (a $2 find while shopping with Zuzu!!)

Here's b. pollux, back from the dead. I had a beautiful specimen of this last year, and then it went into a sudden decline. I still don't know what it was balking about, but I down potted it significantly and here it is today. It's been a slow recovery for it.
Butch, how's yours doing? Better than mine I suspect!!

One that I picked up at PHOE that I just love. This is one easy begonia to take care of. It's a happy clam despite my neglect. It's also small and compact. Begonia 'Lemon Shag'

Great plants, Frosty roundabout is very different. b. pollux is a beautiful shade of silver-blue. Thanks for posting.

Here's one I grabbed at Longs while shopping with Kell. I don't know it's name, but loved it's petite look.

my pleasure Susan, I have a few more to show and tell on this (foggy and cold) Monday morning. Brrrrr it's about 54º right now!

Here's one from Joan Coulot's collection which was mis-ID'd as 'Connor', it's not. I'm still hoping to find it's name. But love the 'stained glass' look of the leaves nonetheless.

Here's another from Joan's collection. Don't have a positive ID on this one yet either. I'll cross post and see if I can find out who it is. Regardless, it's a keeper with those white polka dots and sinus curl!

Here's a good old standby, this is one of those begonias that thrives on auto-pilot for me. Begonia thurstonii.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Here's another that thrives on abuse. I'm not a big fan of this one, but she's starting to grow on me (no pun intended) because she's so tough. This is the only begonia that I leave out in the winter. It stays at the edge of my porch, loses most leaves but bounces back in the spring. (cuttings for trade if anyone is interested)
Begonia 'Sophie Cecile' - She just bloomed too. I cant recall that I've seen her bloom before.

Great pictures, especially the first one - almost eerie.

Yes, 'Pollux' is doing great but has some black edges as well from getting to close to the fluorescent bulbs me thinks. Here it is back in Feb with the 'Orange Sherbet' and 'Fiji Islands' that you sent as well. 'Queen Olympus' is the dwarf in front I got from an eBayer.

I keep meaning to take everything out of the tank, clean it up, and put everything back in except the ferns and impatiens but they are doing fine despite the overgrown conditions.

Have you still got your symbegonia and luxurians? Mine did well in the tank until it got too humid (I think) and then they started rotting. Maybe next year I will try those again.

Here's another from Joan's original collection. Not sure who it is either.

How's 'Mrs. Ludwig' doing for you? Here is mine a week or so ago.

Morning Butch! I lost symbegonia a bit ago. It was thriving and then did the nose dive. Not sure why. I have another coming.
Luxurians is doing fine. I have one that I got from a Daver last year, and then I bought one at the convention that was marked as something else. It's under grow lights. But we have a big mother plant at the arboretum so if I lose mine, I can always get another.
Your b. pollux is looking way better than mine! My Fiji isn't doing too bad, but I've seen it look better. As it gets older it's so gnarled at the rhizomes (all fused) that it starts looking weird. I may need to rejuvenate it and start some new cuttings. My 'Cathedral Window' is looking pretty good too. You know, last year I did a leaf cutting of Fiji and this year it's grown out a bit and is very weird in how it has reverted. It's actually a pretty leaf. I'll try and get a photo of it.

In the mean time, here's a shot with a noid in the middle, don't care that I don't know it's name, it's a keeper! That's 'Fireflush' in the back right, some kind of aralia front right. 'Shamus' bottom left. Plectranthus argenteus 'Silver' about 8 o'clock, then a few impatiens balfourii, with the tiny begonia fuchsioides in the back there.

I know I've posted this begonia before, but I just love it!!

Beautiful rex. It is definitely a keeper. 'Fireflush' is looking great as well.

Here is 'Suncana' or 'Sunbar' the best I can determine. Very large grower.

I searched through my greenhouse and couldnt find Mrs Ludwig. BUT we have it down at the arboretum, one Brad sent me I think. Cant remember where it came from since Mike sent me some too. I'll take that lasagna any day! Yum! PHOE's Cleo looks great! My 'Littie Cleo' is doing well. I need to take some more photos in the greenhouse while we have this fog. I think it makes for good lighting.

I came home from the arboretum sale with a few new begonias. 'Fairy Wings' a caudiform type, another Little Brother Montgomery since mine bit the dust a while back, a few more of the upright jointed kind but can't recall the names off hand (I left my purchases down there since I didn't want to leave them in my car all day, It was my son's 14th birthday and we played in SFO all day, shopping and wandering Market street etc, then Sushi for dinner)
I also bought a huge 'Bess' and another b. gehrtii. I have a nice one, but my little one is doing the nose dive.

I also found a nice ping and a very cool impatiens. First time it's been offered to the public. I'll take photos on Wed. when I go back down there.

Here's another I got at PHOE, no idea who it is(never had a tag and I forgot to ask Tim), but it's profuse bloomer and had army green leaves with a metallic sheen to them. Hard to capture it though.

The leaf looks like 'Sunbar' - what a beauty! Nice work.

I can't claim all the credit on Fireflush, that's a recent purchase from Trader Joes, but who can say no to $4.99 for that one eh?
Not me!

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

That last one looks like a great grower.

What is this one? Wal-Mart had some for sale off and on the last couple of years. I've seen it named 'Hemsleyana' but then I've also seen the name on U404 too.

Thumbnail by hcmcdole
Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

At that price, I'd get 3 at least. He he.

Here is 'Black Coffee'. I got it years ago from PHOE mail order.

Thumbnail by hcmcdole
Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Nelumbiifolia (I hate to spell these out but hate to look them up worse) and some kind of heracleifolia.

A little GA red clay splash back from rain and watering never hurt anyone.

Thumbnail by hcmcdole
Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Yes, at that price I grabbed extra 'Escargot' and 'Iron Cross'. They're huge in 6" pots! I couldn't resist!

I don't think it's 'Hemleyana'/404 , I have it. here's the astro photo. http://swregion.tripod.com/uxxx/spic_uxxx/U404.jpg
that's what mine looks like.

Love the Black Coffee. Might have to smooth talk you out of a cutting of her!! =º)

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Nice nelumbiifola! Mine is so puny now. Do you grow heracleifolia pyramidalis?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

To keep this ball rolling (please keep sharing photos Butch and others!!), I'm heading out to the greenhouse to take a few more shots and check in on any begonias that are MIA. Such a jungle that sometimes the little ones get lost in there.
I better organize before I hit Kartuz or I wont have any room for the new ones!!!

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

I know it isn't 404 - I have that as well. I'm just trying to find out if 404 has been named that(look at PDN which doesn't have the U number and Logees which has both).

http://logees.com/prodinfo.asp?number=B3047-2

I'm pretty sure I've seen the above rex on some website called Hemsleyana so we have more confusion floating around.

My U404 last year.

Ah, I see. Maybe cross post to yahoo?

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Nah. Here is a great one - U434 which is now showing up as barsalouxiae. Another hard one to get through the winter. This is my second one so I will probably put it under a humidity dome for winter this time.

Thumbnail by hcmcdole
Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I dare not get a barsalouxiae. Looks like I'd need a dome year round on that one! It's one I've been jonesing for.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Here's Mrs. Fred T. Scripps. She's shoulder high to me. So big in fact that the pot can no longer hold her up so she leans into the kumquat tree.
She's a pretty prolific bloomer too. Hasn't stopped since just after Kell gave her to me! {Kell}

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Here she is again, leaning heavily like the Tower of Pisa. See the tip burn! Poor begonias. Glad our weather has mellowed out.

Here's a noid that I call 'Freckles' for lack of a proper name. One of only two that I grow in my house. The other is a rexie that I think is called Blue Boy? (Butch do you recall it?)

edited to add that I brought her out to take her picture and give her a soil drench. She was on the dry side.

And another one that looks similar. this is Wimauma (I've seen it spelled Wineuma and other ways, but this is the spelling from the ABS database so I'll go with that for now.)

I'll get a better shot, but this is two leaves only, bigger than dinner plates each.

Here's a cutting I started from one that I have a tentative ID on, B. peltata (not sure if it was kellermanii or not) BUT then while searching the Astro site I find this
http://absastro.tripod.com/hkey/hpicother_az/VelvetJeans.jpg Velvet Jeans. They look so similar!

Here's the mom plant. Had to whack it back last week as it was falling over. (ya think it's time to repot!)

Ohhhhh, OK, I want one of each!!

I picked this one up for $6.99 at Oakland Long's the other day. No name of course.

On peltata, Mom and daughter look different. I'll take one of the daughter.

That is Bill's Beauty and you are right, here is another one that has too many look alikes. I had Reddington Shores more than once and again it is another hard one to get through the winter.

The jury is still out on Mrs. Fred. Not exactly a stunning beauty, but she looks like a big boned lady, huh?

Freckles looks nice and the name seems fitting. Blue Boy or Blue Wings. Here is Blue Boy.
