H. compacta 'Moana Loa'

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I am looking for a cutting of this cultivar...anyone have it?

I do. Tiny though, a very slow grower.

Oh thanks, Christine...PLEASE don't cut it....not that urgent. Thanks a million for getting back to me...

I have long vines of the one hanging on the olive tree. Is that the one your looking for? It is the "compacta version" of Krimson Queen. with the white edges and pink new growth.
Marcy

No, Marcy the one with the new red growth and white edges is H.Compacta Regalis. H. Compacta Mauna Loa has green-edged leaves and has cream on the inside of the leaf.

My reason for asking is that I know someone really looking for this H. compacta and I am sure he would trade with whoever has it...or pay postage.

Carol

When mine grows up some I'd be happy to trade. Not likely this year though.

I've been told that the 'Mauna Loa' is all green, and that the one with green egdes, white and pink centers is called 'Rubra'. I think it was CB who pointed this out to me once.

Not a clue, here. Could be. This person is looking for the one with the cream centers and green around the edges. Since Mauna Loa is a mountain here, that gets a white crown with snow in the winter storms, I would have thought it would be the white edges....but nope.

Oy Vay!!! How can we know what we want if we don't even know what we or anyone else has?? Does anybody know anything for certain about these strains of hoya, I wonder?

Christina, there's no pink at all on this one, just lighter green and "almost cream" going towards the centre. The leaves are much smaller than compacta, and a far lighter green.

I was told that H.Carnosa Rubra is the "real name" of H.Carnosa Krimson princess.

So, Carol, does this person actually know what he wants? Do I have the "real" "Mauna Loa"? Does anybody really know what it looks like?

I feel better now. The men in their white jackets are coming though...gotta run.......

Christine

Whew!! Thanks Carol. yes, I have Mauna Loa.

All I know is that he described it for me.....with the cream centers and green on the outside in the form of H. compacta (Hindu Rope).

C. can you send me a Dmail with your address and I can put him in touch with you??? or you with him???

I know you folks don't like to post pictures at PlantFiles but you should once in awhile read there just for your amusement ;)

Can't remember the Patent number Cobia had on it otherwise you can look it up Yourselfs in the Patent search.

I didn't write CARNOSA 'Rubra' since we were talking about compacta I assumed I didn't have to write out compacta 'Rubra'.

Christina

I knew that Christina, I just remembered that "Rubra" was associated with the carnosa and has similar colouring to ML; sorry to have confused the issue, I was just trying to clear out my own cobwebs.

I feel properly chastized Milan. Thank you. I will start posting more pictures. Just have to get all the cat hair out of the leaves....lol...

FYI- cowboyflowerman is selling the one with green edges and lists it as "mauna loa" but it has the variegation as you described it: Green edges. -joanne

Just want to make a public apology for misspelling MAUNA in the title of my post. GOSH...what was I thinking?! Since I never ever make mistakes, or typos...never transform or transpose letters...I must have been possessed by the devil himself!!! Yes, the name of the cultivar is Mauna Loa (which happens to be a large mountain on our island which is often covered with snow after winter storms here). My apologies for such a goof. :>)

Hmmm Carol do You want to win the price for perfection or what ??? ;)

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Well - it is a pity I can't remember how to spell when I am in a hurry....I get busy and let my fingers do the walking. :>)
