Wish I had a better picture, but it's late in the season in my yard.
We've always called this a thimble berry, but when I looked for information on it I found that "thimble berry" refers to a type of berry, not just this one. Anyone have a more specific name for this berry?

Thimble berry?
Well, I call them thimbleberries too. Botanical name Rubus parviflorus. It produces white flowers followed by red fruit. Salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis) is somewhat similar but pink to magenta flowers and yellow to salmonish colored fruit.

I wouldn't be at all surprised. They grow wild all over the place. Unfortunately the berries are so fragile that about all you can do is eat them right off the bush, after checking carefully for little crawlers. I think trying to wash them would leave one with red goop all over and no berries for jam or what ever.

Good to know I'm not the only one. I'm familiar with salmon berries, and so are the bears which I'm sure is who gets every one before I do!
We used to have these in Port Orchard, too. Fuzzy, delicate little berries. Neither the plant or the fruit reminded me of the salmonberries much, though, which grew huge and had a firmer, non-fuzzy fruit. Salmon colored, or course.
Salmon berries and thimble berries are different. The thimble berry has very little fructose and not much moisture. It eats good on a hike but not much flavor. Salmon berries up here in Ak are delicous. They are more red and larger than the ones I ate in seattle. The only problem is they have often slugs in the center and you need to look closely at all the fruit you pick cause I ate one with a slug. Euuuuuch! I had to brush my tongue for an hour to get the slime off.

I have some HOT peppers, hotter than the red savina, that would remove that slime in a new york second, but then, it also would prolly remove a layer of your tongue also, lol.
I have never been a pepper man. I enjoy my jalapenos but nothing hotter. Something about we Scot/Germans havent the ability to handle such painfull foods. Your right it might be a good way to eat slugs with hot pepper. You probably would never sense the slime. LOL
