and I blew it ;-( I was sitting on the porch having coffee and this big white looking thing flew towards the ground to the weeds growing between my plants in pots. I told myself no way!!!! not at 10 a.m. I got up and looked and ran back for my camera. Got only theses 2 pics of the Luna moth which are terrible.
Dream come true
it landed on the grass and it leaned backwards to where it was almost on the ground. I carefully picked the stem of grass, handed it to DH so I could get a good pic and before I could focus it took off ;-(,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Hoping it was a male so I might get another chance. I read that the males hatch a few days before the females and that females don't not fly from where they hatch until they have bread
DonnaB, this is my first year to notice these flying creatures, and I have got in the habit now to grab my camera even before my coffee. LOL. I am then set to go outside. John
By the way, those look like some pretty good shots to me.
But Donna, it's not the picture that's important, it's that you SAW it and know they are somewhere near you! :) Yay for you!! I'm still waiting for my sighting.
Is that Sicklepod or Candlestick plant?? I have tons of sulphur butterflies lay eggs on mine in the late summer!!!
Wow! I've only dreamed of seeing one of these in person. You are so lucky. Beautiful.
freckle that is some type of mimosa like weeds that grow all over here
I didn't get a good look at it ;-( I handed it right off to DH so all I saw was the underside
Donna, how great! I know you've been waiting to see one.
I'm sorry. :( I bet you'll see one again, when you least expect it. I'm guilty of this myself, trying to get the pic and realizing I spent the whole time looking at it thru the camera. Just don't worry about a pic next time and enjoy looking at it.
Lovely moth!
I searched thru DG plant file and your mimosa weed is probably Mimosa microphylla - a native plant, but bothersome to most in gardens. It doesn't look like the chinese version - which isn't a mimosa at all - just looks like one.
thank you indirt
Yes it is a weed and I pull tons of them every day. Love the photos and hope to see one of those beauties someday. Karen
tropicalkaren,
I have Mimosa borealis - at first I thought I had the Chinese kind, but it is native. I also thought I only had a few, but now I suspect I have quite a few.
However, this spring, I glimpsed its beauty - intoxicating, mesmerizing. Photos are ugly and don't do this plant justice.
My mimosa is grazed by cattle - is possible that others are too in their native habitats, keeping their numbers down. If you have it in a garden setting, I can understand calling it a weed!
Congrats Donna!!! I am so jealous!! LOL
I thing the shots are pretty darn good.
