Gordon, the picture is beautiful as well as the brugs. I wish we had some of that rain.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

here's a few more..
in a few days ...I'll post some more as they all start to bloom... I'm working on a hedge...format.. in lew of a row of standards.. they looked so weak..I couldn't bear to chop off the sprouts and new uncomforming growth.. now they are strong...and I can't see loosing the additional flowers.. after them being so nice as to appear..

Gordon, you make good points for brug. bushes vs. standards. You have a plan for them and that's good also. I have yet to figure out how to work them into my landscaping as I find them messy and unsightly when the going gets rough. During our heat wave, which seems to have swept across the country, I had more yellow leaves on the ground than green on the plant. They are so ugly when defoliated and there's just stems going this way and that. I have grown fond of the variegated brugs, however, as they lost few leaves in the heat. I'm looking forward to more of your pictures.

Very pretty Gordon!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Gordon, your rooftop is no doubt the best in NY!! You add so much oxygen to the air there not to mention beauty.

Tussie, I agree, a brug with no blooms/leaves is not a great sight. And they are litterbugs by nature. That is why I like to keep mine as standards with a small but dense canopy.

I just got off the phone with my boy in NY Gordon, and then open Dave's and find you. Are you by any chance near Columbia? My kid needs a really good dentist. Do you have a referral by any chance? LOL

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

well.. thanks Kell... making NYC the great city it is.. one small bit at a time..
about the dentist..no I don't know of a great one.. I'm out here in Brooklyn now .. I moved out from the uper west side ...[ just south of Columia ] some 20 years ago.. I don't know of a dentist near him.. you get the best views looking into the city.. once you are there ... you can't see out nearly as well.. Gordon

Wow what a garden sight and what a view. Just incredible!! I bet you like to sit there in the evening or early morning before it gets too hot and just look out in wonder.

My kid LOVES NYC! I just do not get it. I moved from NJ/Boston over 30 years ago and never looked back. But the kid couldn't wait to live in NYC! This week he was offered a position in a law firm there when he graduates next year and he is taking it...break my heart. Though I would never tell him that. The lure of the big city. Most people would prefer San Francisco I would think. Oh well! I still have hope, it is a huge law firm and has offices all over the world. It is my sincere hope that he decides at some point to transfer home to SF. Though right now he is excitedly talking about transferring to another country as soon as he can. That would be my demise. LOL.

Kell, is your son into corporate law?

Wow is that a wonderful looking roof garden you have there Gordon....
Sounds like you needed the rain but not all that went with it! Glad it helped out with your Garden and cooled things down.
Thanks for sharing your fantastic garden and view of NY.

Yes Felicia. Last summer the California Silicon Valley law firms were fighting over him because one of his degrees from Stanford is in Engineering, Computer Science. He hated the work in Intellectual Property though, found it boring and was even considering not practicing law when he graduated. So much for that computer degree giving him an in a law field.

Then this summer he decided to try Mergers and Acquisitions in NY and had the best time. First time I have ever known my kid to actually put work into something and effort. He was told he was their best summer associate ever and this was one of the top 5 law firms in the country. So he was walking on cloud 9 all week.

Forgive my shameless bragging. But the kid finally has matured this year and is a fine young man. We are so proud of him. He was supposed to come home this week but because of all the air travel problems, I think he won't be home now till Christmas. I am so sad. But he still calls his Momma when he is hurting, LOL...he has a toothache.

Sorry Gordon!

Kell,
That's great! Kudos to your son. Interesting that he found IP to be boring -- that is THE big thing now. Mergers and acquisitions, eh? Glad he was dubbed so highly as a summer associate--that's pretty hard to come by.

I work for a corporate law firm as well, though not as an attorney. I am a corporate litigation secretary specializing in appellate law (Court of Appeals). But, my second function is as the Professional Personnel Recruiting Committee Administrative Assistant, so I see many, many, resumes each year. I arrange interviews with prospective summer associates for the firm (we have 5 offices we hire for). We are one of the top firms in the country as well, so, when you said your son was offered a position at a large firm, I just knew it had to be corporate.

Just tell him to work those 10,000 hours a year and he'll make partner in no time. :)

I bet you have a most interesting job. Felicia. I just can't see my kid working so hard, I must say. He is a party boy or at least always has been. They also told him he can work part time if he wants during his school year on a special project. And for this they will pay him $80 /hr. He is 24 years old. He has made more than I was making as an old lady who has been an RN for years and years since his first year in law school. Something just doesn't seem right. Plus when he called, he got me to say I would pay for his dentist. See how smart he is? Or is it how dumb I am? LOL! No wonder I make less.

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

Hmmm... maybe he should be in litigation? :)
It's hard on these kids coming fresh from school and to have those huge dollar signs waved in front of their faces. It's mindboggling. And, when they are summer associates, they are being wooed by the firm. And to be the best summer associate at one of the top 5 firms in the country, well, that just opens so many doors, and many firms will offer him the moon and more.
Then, when he starts working as an associate attorney, he'll wonder what happened to all the cool summer associate events. :)
I'm sure he'll do fine. He sound very impressive, and you should be proud.
As for me, Kell, my job(s) are well-rounded, to say the least. I love being a litigation secretary. Recruiting, well, I'm not very comfortable with it. But, then again, it was supposed to be temporary, and that happened 3 years ago.
Oh, and on the side, when I have time between being mom and working at the firm, I'm a landlord as well.

LOL, you are so right about being wined and dined. I am constantly amazed. He goes to the best restaurants in NY on them. In fact he wanted NYC because he said they spoil their summer associates more than SF firms do. That is my boy. LOL. He does live large but we stopped paying his bills after his freshman year. He was living way too well on us. When he started having his shirts hand tailored just for him, we cut the cord. Tuition with room & board alone is over $50,000 a year, so his money is being spent fast which keeps him in line some.

You sound like one busy lady! Must be hard to keep up. You must be so organized. To have such a job, your work I bet is top notch. How old are your kids?

Have you ever seen a honey bee that has been at work for awhile, and is covered with pollen. Too cool! Love to see mother nature at work ..... most of the time. I could do without certain spiders and snakes. LOL

Gordon it must be heaven to come home from work to go out on your roof top into the garden. But tell me, 1. How long a growing season do you have there? i.e. when do you put the plants out in the spring? and,
2. how do you have them so close together without getting insects and diseases spread through them?

Your garden is just lovely, Jeanette
