My Hummers finally came back, pics

Roscoe, TX(Zone 7b)

The Rufouses (Rufi?) have come back, but I have a feeling that they are about to leave.

Here's the difference between a Black-chinned male and female: the male has the black chin.

You guys said to buy a Humzinger, so I did. This Ruby-Throat seemed to like it alright.

I think this one is a Calliope (sp?). Maybe you guys can help me out. This bird had a hard time finding a feeder without getting dive bombed by the others. It seemed smaller than the other hummers and wouldn't stand his ground in a fight. This is the feeder from Hefner Plastics.

I thought this was a Black-chin at first... The color doesn't seem quite right, however. It looks like a different color of purple than what I'm used to seeing on Black-chins. Almost pink. Any ideas?

I'm now thinking that maybe it's a Broad-tailed.

oh I would give almost anything to have the hummers you have. We only get the Rubys. They are starting to congergate here too.
Fabulous pics

I have a Humzinger feeder that they seem to love, but they ignore my other feeder that is one of those pretty decorative ones with a single tube that hangs down. Is this normal?Any ideas for getting them to use both? nancy

Hmmm, I guess you might try putting the decorative feeder in a different spot. It seems hummers like to have a clear view of everything around them (to see possible predators) and have some open sky to escape to. If you have placed the feeder in a tree and it has a lot of limbs around the feeder, they might not go to that feeder (as much). When hummers escape, they like to fly horizontally first and then go up after they have put in some distance.

WOW, your photos are amazing! I occasionally take photos of the RT and BC hummers around my yard, but they are nothing like yours. That Calliope is a real cutie.

What is the vine with the red blooms? Cardinal vine?

Yes, it is Cardinal Climber or sometimes referred to as Cypress vine. I collect the seeds in the fall and plant them in the spring. I also plant some Spanish Flag vine seeds in the spring too. These two vines grow on top of my evergreen Crossvine. I have a camera with a 12x optical zoom so that helps. I need to buy a better flash for it, however. Here's a new picture of a female Rufous.
