Canna 101 Question

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Hello.

I have many Cannas in my garden and they are now blooming up a storm. Attached is a pic of Canna 'Wyoming', a new one for me this year.

Should I be cutting off the spent bloom spikes to force the plant's energy towards new flowers, or does it not matter? I am not interested in producing seeds, just as many flowers as possible during our short season.

Thank you.

I always cut the spikes off even if I want seeds. I start leaving pods around October but cut all the other ones off until then. They will send up more bloom spikes.

Canna 'Wyoming' Does not Make seeds

phicks, I initially doubted you, as I had just cut off several bloom spikes with large seed pods. But upon closer inspection (i.e. tearing them apart), I discovered they contained tiny, vestigal seeds. You were right on!

Erick
