ALYSSUM - do they grow form seed easily

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Does Alyssum grow easily from seed? If so, does anyone have them for trade/postage? I have white and purple cleome seeds to trade.

I dont know if Alyssum grows well with seed or not but I know it spreads nicely from already started. I didnt put any in this year. But will next year so I will be watching your thread to find out myself. Thanks for starting it.

Cleome is such a pretty plant, but stinky. LOL I planted mine by a walkway, (how stupid) I will have to move them next year. I have Purple, Pink and White. I just love them.

Are those pit bulls I see? My son just got a little girl - Yay is her name and she's a red nose pit. I know nothing about the types but she's brown and white with a red nose. 6 weeks or so old. Her tail isn't docked and ears are not clipped. You always hear so much bad stuff about them but the few I've been in contact with are genle and loving. I have 3 shihtzu's and they all play together, along with 4 cats. So Yay should grow up knowing not to hurt them.

The Cleome looks like a pot plant and we had that conversation on DG chat this week. It's funny how most of us live near a cop - my hubby is a retired Chief of Police and it's so funny when the teenagers laugh that mom's growning pot. I have them near the house/walk but the smell isn't there unless you touch them.

Now I need to find some Alyssum seeds. I moved the one plant I had and forgot to plant it - dead now. It was so beautiful and bright this spring. I knew then I wanted more. They didn't bloom very long but I love them.

Thanks for the info.

Kathy, alyssum are very easy from seed. Not very hardy tho, they love cool weather, but die in heavy frost. I buy my seed from Stokes, they have a lot of colors. I would offer you seed, but I never save it, too small for these old eyes to track.

This is not alyssum....not even close.

I find them very easy from seed and they seldom, if ever, freeze over the winter for me.

Kathy,

They are miniature pinschers. My father-in-law (72ys old) has a pit bull and she is a big baby.
I read that thread on the cleome looking like pot it was so funny. And mine stink when the sun hits them.

Dale,
Those bigger thingies are nice.

Beck,
I'm really glad to hear it. I've been reading a lot about them and 99% positive. I know they have terrible press but any animal can be trained to be aggressive, even my shihtzu's.

Kathy,
Yes alyssum is very easy to grow from seed, there are different ones, however, annuals as well as a yellow perienneal. The annuals come in purple, white, and a pinkish purple..I grow them every year, I may have an extra package of seed somewhere of the white sweet alyssum if that is what you are talking about..I buy them up just about everytime I am somewhere and see them...I use them a lot!

The one I had was a yellow perinnial. That's really what I'm looking for, I don't know what the annual version is like -I'll search DG for that and get back to you.

Thanks,

The annual version is easy from seeds. I usually just toss it in pots and keep it watered once it is warm enough outside. You can get some nice colors, white, lilac, pink, purple and a couple of different mixes. There is a purple called Oriental Nights that is pretty or a pastel mix called Easter Basket and Renee's Garden has a pretty mix called Gulf Winds. Some people like the smell (like me), I think it smells like a mix of honey and warm hay, but others are not fond of it at all.

I've never tried the perennial (think it's called Basket of Gold or Gold Dust) but it looks pretty nice.

Kathy,
Did you find the Basket of Gold? Just curious. If not, dmail me and I will check my seed boxes.
