Black Tip Fungus

Tustin, CA

I Have a cutting about 3 or 4 months old. About 4 weeks after the
tips started to grow the leaves started to turn black and fall off.
Now all the tips are black and the ends will not grow.
What a suprise when it seemed to be doing well. One of the
ends has branched and is getting leaves on it. Right now it
is growing in the shade.

Should I move it to a sunny spot and
does this need to be done slowly?

I did read the threads from a year ago about this same sort of a
problem. I to have both Neem oil and physan 20. I have already
used the neem oil.

Is there a problem with using physan 20 right after
neem oil?

And what is up with the curling leaves?

Any info would be helpful

Thank you

Check the roots to see if they have rotted.
If they are fine then it is black tip and the tips may need to be cut off and the ends treated with fungicide.
Black tip is ussually caused by frost or freezing.
That is why I say check the roots.
If it is root rot and the tips are black then all is lost as the rot has moved through the plant from bottom to top.
There is also a condition called stem rot and this plumie could be salvageable if it isnt too far gone. Pics would help big time
Good luck and post some pics for a better diagnosis.

Yes, if you could post some pics, that would be really helpful. Is this a Sinapore, Texas Aggie, or Marion B cutting? All three are prone to Black Tip if put in cool, damp areas, but this usually happens in early spring, not the heat of summer. The sun is the best healer for black tip, and as Michael said, the tips can be cut off, and new branches will sprout beneath the cut. Spraying with a fungicide can help also. Or, it could just be rotting from the top down or from the bottom up. It's hard to say without seeing a picture. I don't think there is a problem of using Neem and Physon 20 together or right after each other; although, the oil might keep the fungicide from penetrating the surface. Curling leaves is usually a sign of a sucking insect like whiteflies or aphids, but it could also be a nutrient problem. I agree with Michael to check for rot first. Use your fingers to squeeze the cutting just below the surface of the soil to see if it feel firm or squishy. If it feels firm, then it is probably just Black Tip. Does it look like this: http://www.plumeria101.com/problems/black_tip.html

Thanks for your help. Yes it looks exactly like the pictures from plumeria101.com. I have no idea what kind it is.
Can I scrub the black end off while using Physan instead of cutting it off.
The black has not moved down the plant from the tip in 2 weeks.
It has 3 branches on it. One of them branched into 2 and is growing just below the black tip. The other 2 have just stoped. Just checked the cutting under the soil and it is solid. How fast can I move it to the sun? So I dont burn the new leaves.
I will take some photos and post them. I will have to figure out how to do that.

Thank you

I would move it to full sun immediately. That will dry up the Black Tip. Full sun is the best cure for it, but whether you cut it or scrub it, it will not grow or bloom again from that tip, but branches will form beneath it. I would cut the one above the new branches and cut the others until you see clean white wood. New branches will form below the cut. It needs to be in full sun for the best growth now as it will take a lot of energy to put forth new branches.

If it doesnt spread I have read that the end will scab and the black tip will fall off on its own.
Have you ever heard that before Clare?

Yes, Michael, I have heard that too and have seen that it is true on my Singapore.

Thanks I will move it to the full sun immediately.
I have been reading the posts on grafting.
A couple of weeks ago I was wondering if anyone ever grafts these.
And yes I know I will have to wait until I solve the problems
and mine gets strong enough before I even think of doing something like grafting. I find all the work you guys are doing amazing.
I hope I can get this one to survive. It will be my first.

Don't give up and dive right in! You don't have to wait for anything. 'Try everything and have fun' is my motto! See if you can find some cheap cuttings to play with and practice grafting on if you like. It's fun! Thanks for the compliment:-)
