Calla foliage "folding up" - thirsty or going dormant?

Dalton, GA(Zone 7a)

My calla foliage is folding up as tho it is trying to retain moisture. This started about 3 weeks ago, so say late July. The ones that get a little afternoon shade don't do it as much as the ones in full sun. I've watered and watered thinking they were thirsty but now I'm wondering if they are going dormant and I should not water so much.

I live in zone 7a and this is my first year with callas. I thought this was a little early for dormancy to begin, but what do I know? LOL. I have had just a very few yellowing leaves in the whole calla bed which I thought were weather related but maybe not.

What do they look like when they are going dormant and abt when would dormancy begin in 7a?

Thanks for any help

My z. rehmanniis (pink calla) which were started very early in doors are doing the very same thing. We have had horrendous heat very early this year and at first I thought it was because of that. But I really think they are ending their season.

I let the seed heads mature on the plant and so I think they're just heading toward dormancy.

I have other rehmanniis that aren't that--young offsets that are about a year old that started later, They're growing fine as are other callas I have. I have a potful that was started very late that has been blooming for the last 3 weeks.

I think everything is fine with yours, AFAIK.

BTW, what kind are they?

They're all from the big box stores - nothing fancy but I got a few very pretty blooms, Gave a white bloom to my mother for Mother's day and she really liked it.

Several of them just said White Zantedeschia. They have large arrow shaped leaves with silver markings. It's great bcs it's a very attractive plant even when it's not in bloom.

I planted 3 Crystal Blush. I only had one bloom but it was pretty. Then there were 5 Zantedeschia Pink. I think thosde turned out to be more purplish. These have a different leaf shape - not sure what you would call it - with no markings.

I'm contemplating leaving them in the ground with lots of mulch for winter. I've read of others in 7a doing that. I may dig up a couple of the white ones just in case.

We've had the heat also of course. And to make matters worse, we had a violent thunderstorm last week that flattened many of my callas. I removed the stems that were actually broken but left the ones that looked like they were still attached. They are still pretty flat.

They're pretty hardy, mostly and with mulch they should be OK there. But sogginess in winter can be deadly. Good drainage is a must.

I leave my pink rehmanniis in the ground here with no mulch but very dry and they do fine. Next year, I'll probably be putting all of mine in the ground, except for the aethiopica hybrids. I just didn't get the soil prepared.

I'd just keep watch over them and see how they do. I get some leaf loss along the way if I've let them get too hot or too dry. I pull them into less light, but that's kinda hard when they're in the ground.....

Good luck.

Robert.
