passion flower seeds

Arlington, TX

Hi All
I was given several seed pods for a lovely passion flower today. It's name starts with the letters Foe.... It is a smaller lavender flower with intersting little green dangly things.

So, what's the best way to propagate these puppies? If I'm successful, I'll have some to share at the swap, so I want to be diligent.

thank you

I think you are referring to passiflora foetida.

Here is a link:

It is really hot for germinating them right now, but fresh is always best.

If you start them now, though, they'd have to be over wintered, as they will die at frost.

I think the same, and I have never started passiflora seeds, but I think it is worth a try.
You might want to save some in case they don't work out at this time.

They are very easy to do from seed, I have done many. I just give all the plants away. Soak for an hour in water; use bagged germinating mix.

The P. foetida I have dies back in winter and comes back every spring. In fact, it comes back earlier than the other ones I have planted outdoors in the ground. It's still blooming even in this heat!

Linda--that's a very pretty passie. Has the most interesting leaf texture of any passie I've seen. =)

May have to keep me one of those.

Neat picture Linda.

I've learned that I need to plant these seeds while fresh. Another reference said to soak for 12 hours...so I'll do that. I've also learned that it will take a minimum of 30 days to germinate. They want 80 degree temps....about what one of my bathrooms stays at in this weather

So I'll relieve them of their pods this afternoon, soak tonight and plant tomorrow.

Anyone want some at the Dallas swap? If the planting gods are with me, I should have a number of them.

Cynthia, can you save a plant for me please?
I don't have that one, Thanks.
Josephine.

Absolutely! I also got another interesting plant: peren. morning glory. It's on a vine like english ivy but had big, saucer shaped, deep blue, morning glory flowers. I was given a good handful of vines to cut apart and root. Perhaps you know the name of this?

I'll try to make plants of this for the swap too. I've been running all day.

Where did you get the seeds from, cynthia? I've heard there are different kinds of P. foetida. The one I have is probably P. foetidea var. gossypifolia and was given to me by another gardener.

Thank you Cynthia, that morning glory sounds very exciting!

I'm lucky that my brother is the prof. at T&M who oversees The Holistic Garden there. We took step daughter to Fish Camp and brother handed me the seed pods from that beautiful passion flower and vines of MG

I'll be back there in 10 days with the promise of more
