golden oregano edible?

Renton, WA(Zone 8a)

I have a bunch of golden oregano that I cut and am drying, but is it edible? I got the plant in a swap, so am unfamiliar with what I can do with it.

Thanks!

This advice is going to sound so hokey, but... if an herb smells good, taste it. If it tastes good, cook with it. Herbs like thyme, oregano, etc. are generally edible in the sense that they won't poison you, even the "ornamental" ones, but some of those varieties have unpleasant bitter or resinous flavors so that you'd probably prefer not to eat them.

lol, sometimes the most obvious solution is best. I remembered to look in Plantfiles too and it says it is edible and less strong than regular, so I'll give it a try.

thanks!

Please be sure to post and let us know what you think! I've got regular and variegated oregano, but no Golden yet. I'm interested in hearing if you like using it for cooking :-)

I'm not certain, but I also seem to remember that there's a "Golden Oregano" out there that's actually a marjoram, which has a similar but less strong flavor than oregano... hmmm.

Other way around actually, it's commonly called golden marjoram but it's really an oregano.

I tasted both last night and actually prefered the golden. We'll see how it cooks up, I'm going to make some tomato sauce soon.

OK, melange! Thanks for setting me straight.... I knew there was something about that plant name!

I'm glad to know you found one with a flavor you like, jb!
