New Greenhouse

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

My DH just had a small greenhouse built for me and I want to share it with you guys. It is not very elaborate but I like it. The first picture is what the back of the house looked like in the beginning. We had a chain link fence that we had to remove in order to start building. Here is one of the worker's sons helping out.

Oh, Jesse, that is completely fabulous!!!!! Big *HUGS* to your DH from me! That greenhouse is huge, and you are going to have such a fabulous time playing in it! :-D

Does this mean that you were able to work out a deal to purchase that house, or are you still renting? I think I lost track of what was happening...

I'm so excited for you!!! WOWZA!

The greenhouse is almost finished and some of the plants have been moved in. The silver thing on the top right is an attic fan converted to a greenhouse fan. The greenhouse has two other vents to keep it from getting too hot. I still need to hang up my lights so I can see at night. But it is beginning to become a real greenhouse.

Now I'm wondering what to do with all of my african violets. What I want to know is how much sun my african violets can take. I am going to order a shade cloth when I get the money but do not have it yet. I don't want them to get too much sun so that is why I'm asking.

We are going to eventually going to buy this house. But first we need to save up for a nice down payment.

Jesse,
That's a wonderful greenhouse! You should be very proud!

As far as your AV's & sunlight ... You might be able to arrange it so they get filtered morning sunshine, but I would not risk them getting full sun.

Maybe you could add a sheet of the green plastic over the AV's only to create a bit of shade???

It all looks so nice & I'm sure you will figure something out.

Congrats!

The photos make the walls look almost invisible but they are not. I'm going to paint a border around the middle of the greenhouse to hide the wire so it will look better. I will probably paint a solid stipe of green around it and then paint some cute little flowers on that.

I'm delighted to hear that you're going to be able to work out a purchase arrangement with your landlord! Last I heard, that was still a bit up in the air, but you thought it might be a possibility. It's sure a lot more fun to make all these great improvements when you're making plans to make it really your own!

I like your idea of putting a border around the greenhouse... most that I've seen look more functional than pretty... yours will be both!

:-)

That is a great idea MsC. I have also seen venetian blinds on the ceiling of some greenhouses. I left a very large blind and a couple smaller ones in the house across the street when we moved. Maybe I should take them down and put them on the ceiling over the african violet section.

Congratulations, Jesse!!
What a boost!

Another idea for the AV's is to put them (even if temporarily) under the shelves/tables of other plants.

Denver, CO

The potential downside to that is water dripping down on the AVs, depending on the bench. Perfect light amount, though. Worth getting a nice clear tray?

Jesse I love your New Green house ! I'm so excitied for you !
Will it be too warm out there for African violets ? I bet Epsicas will love it !

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

No, it will not be too warm. We have an attic fan in it that actually has a thermostat that we can adjust and it keeps it really cool. I have most of the plants moved out to the greenhouse now and it is beginning to really look nice.
