Amorphophallus (Voodoo lily) Konjac

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Here's the bloom in early spring. I received 2 bulbs from my uncle in 2005. The largest about as big around as a basketball, but not round about 8 inches thick. The blooms smells like a dead mouse (to me, anyway) BUT, only lasts a couple days.

I've been eyeballing this plant for a while now. Just a complete fascination to me!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Me too! How does it do that???? After the bloom, it grows a "tree".... mine reached 6ft- easy, last year, with a 6ft canopy. I had it in the ground, 6 "volunteers" showed there pretty little canopy's this spring, they are about a foot tall now.

How impressive!! Did that kid come out of a grocery sack too? ;)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Nope, maybe an ol'bag! LOL He's a senior this fall and my "baby". I call him my "late bloomer", a surprise, I was 33 and his sisters were 11 & 9.

ROTFLOL My hubby was a surprise like that too. At 36, his mom had a 15, 11 and 10 year old and went to the doctor because she felt ill. The doc told her she was prego and she told him he was full of it. LOL

I turned 38 this year and am still deciding if I can or want to try to squeeze out two more before I hit 40. ;)

He's a good looking boy!

Oh my gosh that was funny!

If people in their 50's can do it - why not?! :)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm in my 50's and have a friend that has a 2 year-old. She's adorable, but after we went to lunch and a little shopping I was ssssooooo tired I had to take a nap. They have incredible energy.

I will not be having kids in my 50s! LOL I'd like to "retire" at some point! As it is now, my own kids will live here for at least 16 more years. That would make my eldest 29. I bet I'll have grandkids before all my own kids leave home. Retirement was a nice THOUGHT! :)

Okay, back to AuntB's funky plant.....I've nearly gotten her cornered into a trade for a baby one but we are running through the lists of our other plants. LOL

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Retire? From parenthood, can you? I don't think it's allowed. Anyway, Badseed I sent you d-mail last night. er.. shall we just barter this publicly? :) Maybe I should go read what I wrote, it was getting late and I wasn't tracking very well.. lol We had a dab of rain and tremedous wind early evening yesterday. (1 brug limb, the only fatality).

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I'll be back to you AuntB. :) I was away 8-10 hours both of the last two days. We have another house an hour from here that we are getting ready to sell. I've not been around much. I haven't promised any of those plants to anyone so you are good. LOL

Hi everyone, first time posting here.
I received this one two years ago, it has not bloomed yet, but like the leafes very much.
Can you tell me if it is hardy to my zone? Till now I always let it have a dorment periode trough out the winter, and take it out and water in the spring. I grow it in a pot.

Welcome Zest, I think your zone is hardy, for what looks to me like you have konjac. In my experience, they can set their own dormancy, I have 2, last year the smaller one, started turning brown on it's own and I forced the large one into dormancy buy whacking it off and digging out of the ground. I'm in zone 5b and I have 5 or 6 "babies" coming up volunteer where I dug the big one last fall. If you have some bulblets, try one this winter and see, but I'm 99.9% sure it will be fine. I had mine dug with at least 6 inches of soil on top. Make sure there is good drainage where you plant it. Mine both bloomed this year, I stuck them in pots and they have just broke the surface in the last couple weeks, guess I'll let them grow until the 1st frost knocks them down and then dig them out and see what I can see. I think the largest one is trying to divide...

Hi AuntB yes it is a konjac, no much expirence with it.
My garden should be fine then, it has more sand than sahara, really :o))
Have two bigger ones and a small one, will try as you suggest with one and se how it goes. If you have your in zone 5b it should do very well.
Thanks Monica
