Plant Ground Cover for Roses???

Gold Bar, WA

Have a problem area in front of my house...the soil is kind of clayish, and I have 3 shrub roses
planted there. They are doing well but am curious about the advisability of planting a low growing
ground cover to keep the soil from crusting over and giving it a neater apperance.
The area is surrounded on three sides with concrete and backed up against the house/porch.

How about some hardy geraniums? there are a bunch of varieties of various shades of pink, violet, and almost-blue, with various heights and bloom-times as well. They are easy to grow and would probably get along with your roses very well.

I did my practicum at a botanical gardens which planted catnip around the roses which attracted hoverflies which killed aphids.

Lavender might be nice. Roses love the allium family esp. garlic & chives. Pests don't like them and I've heard that somehow garlic enhances the fragrance of roses.
